Is unemployment paid weekly biweekly in Washington - confused about payment schedule
I just got approved for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and I'm trying to figure out the payment schedule. I know I have to file weekly claims every week, but when do the actual payments come? Is it weekly or biweekly? I've been looking through the Washington ESD website but can't find a clear answer about when payments are actually deposited. Some people are telling me different things and I want to make sure I understand so I can budget properly.

Washington ESD pays unemployment benefits weekly, but there's always a one-week waiting period for your first payment. So you file your weekly claim every week, but the payment for that week comes the following week if you're eligible.

•So if I file my weekly claim on Sunday, when would that payment actually show up in my account?

•Usually 2-3 business days after you file, assuming there are no issues with your claim. Most people see deposits by Wednesday or Thursday.

The payments are weekly but if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to verify your payment schedule or resolve any issues, I had success using Claimyr to actually reach an agent. They help you get through the phone system - there's a demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and the site is claimyr.com. Way better than spending hours on hold.

•Thanks! I haven't had any issues yet but good to know there's a way to actually talk to someone if I need to.

•How much does that service cost? I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about a payment issue.

To clarify the payment schedule: Washington ESD processes unemployment benefits weekly. You file your weekly claim between Sunday and Saturday (most people do it Sunday). The payment for that week gets processed and deposited 2-3 business days later, assuming your claim is approved and there are no holds or issues.

•This is super helpful, thank you! So it's not like getting a paycheck every two weeks from a job.

Zane Hernandez
•Exactly. It's weekly payments for weekly claims, but each payment is delayed by about a week from when you earned it.

Wait I'm confused too... I thought all unemployment was biweekly? I've been filing every two weeks and wondering why I'm not getting paid!

•No, Washington ESD requires weekly claim filing! You need to file every single week to get paid for that week. If you've been filing every two weeks, you're missing payments.

•Oh no! Can I go back and file for the weeks I missed?

•You might be able to file late claims but there are usually penalties or restrictions. You need to contact Washington ESD immediately to sort this out.

•Good to hear from someone with experience. Do the payments ever get delayed beyond the normal processing time?

Ethan Scott
•sometimes around holidays or if theres a system issue, but usually pretty consistent

Just to add - your payment method also affects timing. Direct deposit is fastest, the debit card can take an extra day, and paper checks take much longer.

•I set up direct deposit when I applied, so that should be the fastest option.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS CONFUSING! Why can't they just make it simple - file weekly, get paid weekly, same day every week. Instead we have to figure out all these delays and processing times.

•i feel you, the whole thing is way more complicated than it needs to be

•I agree it's confusing at first, but once you get into the routine it becomes automatic.

For anyone having issues reaching Washington ESD about payment questions or delays, I'll mention Claimyr again - it really does work for getting through to actual agents instead of being on hold forever. Much easier than the regular phone system.

•I'm definitely going to need this to fix my filing schedule mess. Thanks for the recommendation.

quick question - if I file my weekly claim on Wednesday instead of Sunday, does that delay my payment?
0 coins
Zane Hernandez
•As long as you file within the Sunday-Saturday window, your payment timing should be the same. The processing starts after the claim week ends on Saturday.

•got it, thanks!

This has been really helpful everyone. So to summarize what I learned: file weekly claims every week, payments come weekly but delayed about a week, and direct deposit is fastest. Thanks for clearing up my confusion!

I had the same question when I started. One thing they don't tell you is that your first payment might take longer because of identity verification or other processing steps for new claims.

Grace Johnson
•How long did your first payment take?

Riya Sharma
•About 10 days instead of the usual 3-4 days, but after that it was regular weekly timing.

Does anyone know if the payment amount changes or is it the same every week?
0 coins
Zane Hernandez
•Your weekly benefit amount stays the same unless you have earnings to report or other changes. It's calculated when your claim is approved and remains consistent.

•Makes sense, thanks!

be careful about the job search requirements too, you have to do that every week along with filing your claim or they can deny your payment

Grace Johnson
•Yes, I read about that. Three job search activities per week, right?

Santiago Diaz
•yep and keep records of everything you do

The weekly payment system actually makes more sense than biweekly when you think about it. If you find work mid-week, you only lose part of one week's benefits instead of a whole two-week period.

•That's a good point I hadn't considered.

One more plug for Claimyr since several people mentioned having trouble reaching Washington ESD - it's honestly been a game changer for getting through to agents when you have questions about payments, job search requirements, or any other issues. Much better than the endless hold times.

thanks everyone for explaining this! I was also confused about the payment schedule when I first applied

One thing to watch out for - if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason, payments stop until it's resolved, even if you keep filing weekly claims. Learned this the hard way.

Grace Johnson
•What causes a claim to go into adjudication?
0 coins
Gabriel Freeman
•Lots of things - questions about why you lost your job, eligibility issues, identity verification problems. Best to resolve it quickly.

•This is another situation where Claimyr can help - they can get you through to agents who can explain what's happening with adjudication and what you need to do.

the payment schedule is definitely weekly but man the timing can be unpredictable sometimes, especially around holidays

Grace Johnson
•Good to know about holidays affecting timing.

Just want to confirm - you file weekly claims but the payment for each week comes about a week later. So there's always about a week lag between filing and getting paid for that week.

Grace Johnson
•Yes, that matches what everyone else has said. Thanks for the confirmation!
