How often do you get paid unemployment benefits from Washington ESD?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits after waiting 3 weeks in adjudication and I'm trying to figure out the payment schedule. Do Washington ESD unemployment payments come weekly or bi-weekly? Also when do they actually hit your account - is it the same day every week? I'm trying to budget and need to know when to expect the money.

Washington ESD pays unemployment benefits weekly, not bi-weekly. You file your weekly claim every Sunday and if everything looks good, payments usually process on Tuesday and hit your account Wednesday morning. The key is filing your weekly claim on time every week.

•Thanks! So I need to file every single Sunday? What happens if I miss a week?

•Yes every Sunday. If you miss filing your weekly claim you won't get paid for that week. You can sometimes file late but it's better to be consistent.

ugh the weekly filing is so annoying though, why cant they just automatically pay us if we're approved?? seems like extra work for no reason

•It's because they need to verify you're still unemployed and available for work each week. The weekly claim asks about any work you did and if you're still able to work.

•oh ok that makes sense i guess. still annoying but whatever

I've been filing weekly claims for 2 months now and the payment timing is pretty consistent. Tuesday processing, Wednesday in my account. But heads up - if there's any issue with your claim it can delay payment. I had one week where I reported some part-time work wrong and it took an extra week to sort out.

•What kind of issues can delay payment? I want to make sure I don't mess anything up.

•Mostly reporting work income incorrectly, not completing job search activities, or if they need to verify something about your eligibility. Just be accurate with everything you report.

Pro tip: if you ever have trouble getting through to Washington ESD on the phone to ask about payment issues, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling when my payments got held up last month.

•How does that work exactly? Do they call for you or something?

Eve Freeman
•Yeah they handle the calling and waiting on hold, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Check out claimyr.com - way better than spending all day hitting redial.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too because that affects your weekly payments. You need to do 3 job search activities per week and log them in your WorkSourceWA account.

•Wait, I have to do job searches every week? No one told me that during my initial claim.

•Yes, 3 activities per week unless you're on standby or have a waiver. Things like applying for jobs, networking, going to job fairs, etc. It's required to keep getting benefits.

•This is exactly why the system is broken. They don't explain the requirements clearly and then people get penalized.

I get paid every Wednesday like clockwork. Been on UI for 6 weeks now. The amount varies slightly if I work part-time that week but the timing is consistent. Make sure your direct deposit info is correct in your Washington ESD account.

•Good point about direct deposit. How long did it take to set up initially?

McKenzie Shade
•Direct deposit was immediate for me once I entered my bank info. Some people get debit cards instead but direct deposit is faster.

Just be prepared for the first payment to sometimes take longer. Mine took 2 weeks after approval because they had to verify my bank account or something. After that it was regular weekly payments on Wednesday.

•Did you have to call them about the delay or did it just show up eventually?

•I called after a week of no payment and they said it was normal processing time for first payment setup. Showed up the next Wednesday.

The payment schedule is weekly but remember you're always one week behind. So the claim you file this Sunday is for last week's unemployment, and you'll get paid for it on Wednesday.

Effie Alexander
•That's confusing. So I'm not getting paid for this current week?

Rudy Cenizo
•Right, there's always a one week waiting period built in. You file for the week that just ended, not the current week.

•You can file late? I thought it had to be exactly on Sunday.

•yeah you have until saturday night to file for that week but sunday is best to avoid any problems

One thing to watch out for - if you get a part-time job while on unemployment, make sure you report those hours correctly on your weekly claim. It affects how much you get paid but you can still receive partial benefits.

•How does part-time work affect the payment amount?

Sienna Gomez
•They reduce your weekly benefit by a portion of what you earned. There's a formula but basically you can earn some money and still get partial unemployment.

I've had payments delayed twice because of adjudication issues. Both times I had to call Washington ESD to find out what was wrong. The second time I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and actually got through to an agent same day instead of calling for weeks.

•What caused the adjudication issues in your case?

•First time was a question about why I left my previous job. Second time they needed to verify some employment dates. Both got resolved once I talked to an agent.

THE SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN! They make you jump through hoops every week and then sometimes just don't pay you for no reason. I've been fighting with them for 3 weeks over a payment that got held up.

•What reason did they give for holding up your payment?

•SOMETHING ABOUT NEEDING TO VERIFY MY JOB SEARCH LOG. I did everything right but they still held it up. Finally got it resolved but what a nightmare.

•This is why I started using Claimyr when I need to talk to someone at Washington ESD. Life's too short to spend all day on hold just to ask a simple question.

For budgeting purposes, I treat Wednesday as my 'payday' and plan accordingly. The weekly amount is consistent unless you work part-time that week. Mine's been $467/week after taxes.

•Do they take taxes out automatically or do I need to request that?

Tyrone Hill
•You can choose to have taxes withheld when you file your initial claim. I recommend it so you don't owe a bunch at tax time.

Been on unemployment for 8 weeks now and payments have been reliable every Wednesday. The key things are: file your weekly claim every Sunday, keep up with job search requirements, and report any work accurately. Don't overthink it.

•Thanks for the reassurance! I was worried it would be more complicated than that.

•It's really not that complicated once you get into the routine. Just stay on top of the weekly filing and you should be fine.

Quick question - does anyone know if holiday weeks affect the payment schedule? Like if Monday is a holiday do payments still come Wednesday?

DeShawn Washington
•Good question! I've noticed payments sometimes come Thursday instead of Wednesday during holiday weeks. Not a big delay but worth knowing.

•That's helpful to know for planning. I'll keep an eye on that.
