How often do you get paid from unemployment Washington ESD - weekly or biweekly?

Just got approved for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and I'm trying to figure out the payment schedule. Do unemployment payments come weekly or every two weeks? I need to plan my budget and bills around when the money actually hits my account. Also wondering if there's a delay between filing my weekly claim and getting paid?

Washington ESD pays unemployment benefits weekly, but you have to file your weekly claim every week to get paid. The payment usually comes 1-2 business days after you file your claim if there are no issues.

Thanks! So I file every week and get paid every week? That's actually better than I thought.

yeah but make sure you file by Sunday night or you'll miss that week's payment

It's weekly payments but only if your weekly claim is processed without issues. If Washington ESD flags something for review, your payment can get delayed even if you file on time. I've had weeks where I filed Sunday and didn't get paid until Thursday because of some random verification thing.

What kind of things cause delays? I want to avoid any issues if possible.

Usually job search verification, reporting work hours incorrectly, or if they need to verify your identity. Sometimes it's completely random though.

I had a 3 week delay because I forgot to update my address and they couldn't verify my identity. Was a nightmare trying to get through to someone at Washington ESD to fix it.

Weekly payments are the standard but getting through to Washington ESD when there's a problem is nearly impossible. I spent weeks calling their main number and either got busy signals or hung up on after waiting hours. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a live agent in like 20 minutes. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me so much frustration when my weekly claims got stuck.

Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work or is it one of those scam things?

It's legit - they just help you get through the phone system faster. I was skeptical too but when you're desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD, it's worth trying.

I used Claimyr too when my account got locked. Way better than spending entire days trying to call Washington ESD myself.

The weekly payment thing is true but don't expect it to always be on time. Washington ESD's system has been having issues lately and sometimes payments are delayed by a day or two even when everything is filed correctly.

Good to know. I'll make sure not to rely on getting paid on the exact same day every week.

Yeah my payments used to come every Tuesday like clockwork but now it's random between Tuesday and Thursday

Weekly claims are due every week and you get paid weekly IF everything goes smoothly. But here's what they don't tell you - if you miss filing your weekly claim by even one day, you don't get paid for that week. There's no making it up later. You just lose that week's benefits completely.

0 coins

Wait, really? So if I forget to file one week I just lose that money forever?

0 coins

Yep, that's how Washington ESD works. You can't backdate weekly claims like some other states. Miss the deadline and you're out of luck.

That's harsh but accurate. I learned this the hard way when I was in the hospital and missed filing one week.

Am I the only one who thinks weekly payments are actually worse than biweekly? Having to remember to file every single week is exhausting and stressful. I wish Washington ESD would just do it every two weeks like some jobs.

I actually prefer weekly because if there's an issue with your claim, you find out faster rather than losing two weeks of benefits

True, I guess that makes sense from that perspective

weekly is better for budgeting too, smaller amounts more often

Don't forget you have to do job searches every week too or they'll stop your payments. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you have to log them when you file your weekly claim. If you don't have the required number, no payment.

0 coins

What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs or other things too?

Job applications, attending job fairs, networking events, informational interviews, even some online trainings count. Check the Washington ESD website for the full list.

WorkSourceWA activities count too if you register with them

Been getting unemployment for 6 months now and the weekly routine is: file your claim every Sunday, get paid by Wednesday usually. Sometimes Tuesday, sometimes Thursday. The timing isn't super consistent but it's always within that window unless there's a problem with your claim.

0 coins

That's really helpful to know the actual timeline. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Same experience here. Usually Tuesday or Wednesday for me.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Waiting for a check in the mail adds another week to getting your money. Direct deposit is way faster and more reliable.

0 coins

Already set that up during my application. Good advice though for anyone reading this.

yes direct deposit is a must. I know people still getting paper checks and they're always complaining about delays

Just remember that your first payment might take longer than usual because Washington ESD has to process everything initially. After that first payment, it should be weekly like everyone said. My first payment took almost 2 weeks but then it was regular after that.

0 coins

Good point. I'll keep that in mind so I don't panic if the first payment is delayed.

0 coins

Yeah my first payment was delayed too but then everything was smooth sailing

The weekly payment schedule is nice but what really matters is making sure your claim doesn't get flagged for adjudication. If that happens, your weekly payments stop completely until they resolve whatever issue they found. Could be weeks or months without any payments.

0 coins

How do you avoid getting flagged for adjudication? That sounds scary.

Be completely accurate with all your information - work history, reason for separation, availability for work. Any inconsistency can trigger a review.

And if you do get stuck in adjudication, that's when services like Claimyr become really valuable for actually reaching someone at Washington ESD to check on your case status.

Weekly payments are standard but the amount depends on your previous earnings. Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. Just so you know what to expect when planning your budget.

0 coins

Yeah I already got my monetary determination letter with my weekly benefit amount. Just needed to understand the timing of payments.

The monetary determination letter should also show your maximum benefit amount for the entire benefit year
