Do unemployment checks come weekly from Washington ESD?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits and I'm trying to figure out the payment schedule. Do the checks from Washington ESD actually come every week? I heard from someone that they might be bi-weekly instead. I'm really confused about when I should expect my first payment and how often they'll arrive after that. My claim was approved last Friday but I haven't received anything yet.

Washington ESD pays unemployment benefits weekly, but you need to file your weekly claim every week to get paid. The payments usually come 2-3 business days after you submit your weekly claim if there are no issues.

•So I have to do something every week to get the money? I thought it was automatic once approved.

•Yes, you have to certify every week that you're still unemployed and looking for work. It's not automatic - you log into your Washington ESD account and file your weekly claim.

•What happens if you miss filing for a week?

•you can usually file for the missed week later but it delays your payment and sometimes they ask questions about why you missed it

The weekly claims have to be filed between Sunday and the following Saturday. If you file on Sunday, you usually get paid by Wednesday if there are no problems with your claim. Direct deposit is faster than waiting for a check in the mail.

•I signed up for direct deposit during my application. Should I expect it Wednesday then?

•If you filed your first weekly claim this past Sunday and have direct deposit set up, yes you should see payment by Wednesday. But your first payment might take a little longer.

•My first payment took like 5 days even with direct deposit, so don't panic if it's not there Wednesday

I was having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about my payment schedule and someone told me about this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. I tried it at claimyr.com and it worked - got through in like 10 minutes instead of calling for hours. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days and can never get through.

•Yeah it's real. They basically call for you and conference you in when they reach an agent. Way better than sitting on hold forever.

•Sounds too good to be true but I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS SO CONFUSING! Why can't they just send the money automatically like social security?? I shouldn't have to jump through hoops every week when I'm already stressed about being unemployed!

•I understand the frustration, but the weekly filing requirement helps prevent fraud and ensures you're still eligible. It's been this way for decades.

•Well it's stupid and makes everything harder than it needs to be

make sure you answer all the questions on your weekly claim honestly... they ask about any work you did and money you earned that week

•What if I worked one day during the week? Do I still get benefits?
0 coins
Yuki Tanaka
•You can work part-time and still get partial benefits. You just report the gross wages from that week and Washington ESD calculates your reduced benefit amount.

Wait, so if I was approved on Friday but haven't filed a weekly claim yet, when do I file my first one?

•You should file your first weekly claim for the week ending after your approval date. Log into your Washington ESD account and you should see the option to file a weekly claim.

•Found it! Thanks, I was looking in the wrong section of the website.

Pro tip: file your weekly claim early in the week if possible. If you wait until Saturday and there's a technical issue with the website, you might miss the deadline.

•Good point. I'll try to remember to do it on Sundays.

How long do the weekly claims take to complete?
0 coins
Yuki Tanaka
•Usually 5-10 minutes. They ask about job search activities, any work performed, and if you were able and available for work that week.

Andre Laurent
•That's not too bad. I was worried it would be as complicated as the initial application.

Does anyone know if the payment amount changes week to week or is it always the same?
0 coins
Aisha Abdullah
•Your weekly benefit amount stays the same unless you report earnings from work. If you work part-time, your benefit gets reduced based on how much you earned.

•Makes sense. Thanks for clarifying that.

I've been getting my payments for 3 weeks now and they've been super consistent. File Sunday, get paid Wednesday like clockwork.

•That's reassuring to hear. I'm still waiting for my first payment.

•Your first one might take a bit longer but after that it should be regular. Hang in there!

What happens during holidays? Do they still process payments?
0 coins
Yuki Tanaka
•Payments may be delayed by a day or two during federal holidays when banks are closed, but you can still file your weekly claim on the normal schedule.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing I mentioned earlier - I used them again this week to check on a payment issue and they got me through to Washington ESD in under 15 minutes. Definitely worth trying if you're having trouble reaching them by phone.

•I might have to try that. Been calling for 3 days straight with no luck.

•Yeah the regular Washington ESD phone line is impossible. This actually works though.

do they send you any kind of confirmation when you file your weekly claim?
0 coins
Aisha Abdullah
•Yes, you'll get a confirmation screen after you submit, and many people get an email confirmation as well. Make sure to keep track of when you file each week.

The weekly filing thing stressed me out at first but now it's just routine. Takes literally 5 minutes once you get used to it.

•Nah, it's the same questions every week. You'll have it memorized after a few times.

Make sure your job search activities are documented properly on your weekly claim. Washington ESD requires 3 job contacts per week and they randomly audit people.

Mateo Lopez
•3 job contacts every single week? That seems like a lot.

•It's the requirement to stay eligible. Keep a log of where you applied, when, and any responses you got.

If you miss filing a weekly claim, can you file it late or do you lose that week's benefits?
0 coins
Yuki Tanaka
•You can file late claims for missed weeks, but Washington ESD will ask why you missed the deadline. Valid reasons include illness, emergencies, or technical issues with their website.

•Good to know there's a backup option. I was worried about losing money if I forgot.

One more Claimyr success story - used them yesterday to get help with a adjudication issue that was holding up my payments. The Washington ESD agent they connected me with was super helpful and resolved it in 10 minutes. Way better than the weeks I spent trying to get through on my own.

•How much does that service cost? Sounds expensive.

•It's not free but honestly worth every penny when you consider how much time and frustration it saves. Plus they only charge if they actually get you connected.

Bottom line: Yes, Washington ESD pays weekly, but you have to file your weekly claim every week to get paid. It's not automatic. File Sunday through Saturday, get paid 2-3 days later if everything's good.

•Perfect summary! That's exactly what I needed to know.
