Washington ESD unemployment payments - does unemployment pay weekly biweekly schedule?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits and I'm trying to figure out the payment schedule. Does unemployment pay weekly biweekly or what's the actual timing? I need to plan my budget and I'm seeing conflicting info online. Some people say you file weekly claims but get paid every two weeks, others say it's weekly payments. Can someone clarify how Washington ESD actually handles the payment timing?

You file your weekly claims every week but Washington ESD processes payments on a biweekly schedule. So you'll submit two weekly claims and then get one payment that covers both weeks.

•So I need to file every week even though I only get paid every two weeks? That seems confusing.

Val Rossi
•Exactly. The weekly filing is required to show you're still eligible, but the payment processing is biweekly to reduce administrative costs.

Wait I thought I was supposed to get paid weekly? I've been filing every week and only getting money every other week, I was worried something was wrong with my claim.

•No that's normal! The biweekly payment schedule is standard for Washington ESD. As long as you're getting payments every two weeks after filing your weekly claims, everything is working correctly.

•OK good, I was starting to panic that my benefits were getting cut or something.

I had the same confusion when I first started. The key thing is you MUST file every week or you'll miss out on benefits for that week, even though payments come biweekly. If you skip a weekly filing, you can't get paid for that week later.

•What happens if I forget to file one week? Do I lose that money forever?

•You might be able to file a late claim but it's really complicated and not guaranteed. Better to just set a reminder to file every week.

This is exactly why I had such a hard time reaching Washington ESD to clarify this payment schedule thing. Their phone lines are always busy and I kept getting conflicting info from different sources. I ended up using claimyr.com to actually get through to an agent who explained the whole biweekly payment system clearly. There's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How does that service work? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about various questions.

•It basically helps you get through the phone queue automatically. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting hung up on.

the biweekly thing is so stupid why cant they just pay weekly like other states do

•It's actually more efficient from an administrative standpoint. Processing payments twice a month instead of four times reduces costs.

•yeah well its confusing for people who need the money

To be completely clear about the Washington ESD payment schedule: You file weekly claims every week (usually Sunday-Saturday), but payments are processed and sent out every two weeks. The payment will cover both weeks you filed for. Most people get their payments on the same day of the week, typically Tuesday or Wednesday after filing.

Romeo Quest
•This is super helpful! So if I file this week and next week, I should expect payment the Wednesday after I file the second week?
0 coins
Clarissa Flair
•That's typically how it works, yes. The exact day can vary slightly but it's usually within that Tuesday-Wednesday timeframe.

I've been on unemployment for 6 months now and I still get confused about whether I'm supposed to get paid weekly or biweekly lol. At least the payments come regularly once you figure out the schedule.

•Same here! I kept checking my account expecting money every week at first.

•Right? I thought there was something wrong with my claim for the first month.

One thing to watch out for - if there's a holiday week, the payment schedule might get shifted by a day or two. Washington ESD usually posts notices about holiday delays on their website.

Romeo Quest
•Good to know! I was wondering about that since there's a holiday coming up.

Natalie Khan
•Yeah, always check their website if you don't get paid on the usual day during holiday weeks.

Does anyone know if the biweekly schedule applies to all types of unemployment benefits? Like what about standby benefits or other special programs?

Clarissa Flair
•Good question! Most unemployment benefits through Washington ESD follow the same biweekly payment schedule, including standby. The filing requirements might be different but the payment timing is usually the same.

Daryl Bright
•Thanks! I'm on standby right now and wasn't sure if the payment schedule was different.

I wish they made this clearer in the initial paperwork. I spent so much time worried that my payments were delayed when they were actually coming on the normal biweekly schedule.

•That's exactly why I posted this question! The information wasn't clear anywhere.

•Yeah it should be explained better in the welcome materials or something.

Another tip - if you set up direct deposit, the payments usually come faster than if you're waiting for a debit card or check. The biweekly schedule is more reliable with direct deposit too.

Romeo Quest
•I have direct deposit set up already, so that's good to know!

Caden Turner
•Perfect! You should see consistent payments every two weeks then, usually on the same day of the week.

Just wanted to add that even though payments are biweekly, if you have any issues with your claim status or payment delays, you still need to keep filing those weekly claims. Don't stop filing just because a payment is late - that will mess up your whole claim.

Romeo Quest
•So keep filing weekly no matter what, even if payments seem delayed?
0 coins
Kirsuktow DarkBlade
•Exactly! The weekly filing requirement is separate from the payment schedule. Never skip filing your weekly claims.

I remember being so confused about this when I first started getting benefits. The weekly filing vs biweekly payments threw me off completely. Now I just treat Sunday as my 'file my claim' day and expect money every other Tuesday.
0 coins
Romeo Quest
•That's a good system! I'm going to set up a reminder to file every Sunday too.

•It really helps to have that routine. Makes the whole process much less stressful.

For anyone still confused about this, I found that calling Washington ESD directly was the best way to get clear answers about payment schedules. I used that claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and actually got through to an agent who walked me through the whole biweekly payment system.

Romeo Quest
•I might try that service if I have more questions. The phone lines are impossible to get through normally.

•Yeah it's definitely worth it if you need to talk to someone directly about your specific situation.

important thing is you get your money eventually! the biweekly schedule is annoying but at least its predictable once you know what to expect

•True! I was just worried I was doing something wrong with my claims.

•nah youre probably fine as long as you file every week and get payments every two weeks

I've been getting unemployment for about 4 months now and the biweekly payment schedule actually works better for my budgeting than weekly would. I get a bigger payment every two weeks instead of smaller ones every week.
0 coins
Romeo Quest
•That's a good way to look at it! I hadn't thought about the budgeting advantage.
0 coins
Tyrone Hill
•Yeah it's easier to plan bigger expenses when you know exactly when the payments are coming.

Just to confirm what everyone else is saying - Washington ESD definitely does biweekly payments even though you file weekly. I was confused about this too when I first started my claim last year.

Romeo Quest
•Thanks for confirming! It sounds like this confusion is really common.

Toot-n-Mighty
•Super common! I think they should explain it better in the initial claim process.

One last thing - make sure you're checking your account regularly even with the biweekly schedule. Sometimes there can be issues with individual weekly claims that might affect your payment, and you want to catch those early.
0 coins
Romeo Quest
•Good point! I'll make sure to check my account status regularly.

Lena Kowalski
•Yeah it's better to catch any issues right away rather than waiting for a missed payment to figure out something went wrong.

Thanks everyone for all the info! I think I've got a good handle on how the Washington ESD payment schedule works now. Weekly filing, biweekly payments, and don't skip any weekly claims even if payments seem delayed.
