Do you get unemployment every week in Washington ESD or is it different?

I'm confused about how unemployment payments work in Washington. Do you actually get money every single week or is there some other schedule? I just filed my initial claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm not sure what to expect. My friend said something about filing weekly claims but I thought once you apply you just automatically get paid. Can someone explain how this actually works?

You have to file a weekly claim every week to get paid. It's not automatic at all. You log into your Washington ESD account and answer questions about your job search activities and any work you did that week.

Oh wow I had no idea! So if I don't file the weekly claim I just don't get paid that week?

0 coins

Donna Cline

•

Exactly. You can usually file for previous weeks if you miss one, but it's better to stay on top of it.

0 coins

yeah you gotta do it every week, its annoying but thats how washington esd works. make sure you keep track of your job searches too because they ask about that

How many job searches do you need to do per week?

0 coins

It's typically 3 job search activities per week in Washington, but check your specific requirements in your account.

I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for three weeks about my weekly claims getting stuck in pending status. Their phone lines are impossible - I get disconnected every time after waiting for hours. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

Is that legit? I'm desperate at this point but don't want to get scammed.

Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent within 20 minutes instead of calling for days.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been filing weekly claims for 2 months and half of them get flagged for no reason. Then you can't reach anyone to fix it. Washington ESD is absolutely useless.

I feel your frustration but there are usually specific reasons claims get flagged. Are you reporting your work search activities correctly?

0 coins

Gianna Scott

•

YES I'm doing everything right! I keep detailed logs of every job I apply to. The system just randomly flags claims.

0 coins

If your claims are consistently getting flagged, there might be an adjudication issue that needs to be resolved by speaking with an agent.

To answer the original question properly: Yes, unemployment benefits are paid weekly in Washington, but you must file a weekly claim every week to receive payment. The weekly claim is due by the end of the week (Sunday night) and you get paid for the previous week's claim.

Thank you! So if I file my weekly claim this Sunday, when would I actually receive the money?

0 coins

Donna Cline

•

Usually 1-2 business days after filing, depending on whether you have direct deposit set up or if you're getting a debit card.

Mine always comes on Tuesday when I file Sunday night. Been getting unemployment for 4 months now.

0 coins

wait so what happens if youre on standby? do you still file weekly claims?

0 coins

Yes, standby status still requires weekly claim filing. The difference is in the job search requirements - you may not need to search for work if you're expecting to return to your job soon.

ok good to know thanks

I missed filing my weekly claim last week because I was in the hospital. Can I still file it late or am I screwed?

0 coins

You can file late weekly claims, but you need to contact Washington ESD to explain the circumstances. Medical emergencies are usually accepted as good cause for late filing.

0 coins

Good luck getting through to them though. I tried for weeks before using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier.

What's Claimyr exactly? Is it expensive?

0 coins

It helps you get through Washington ESD's phone system. Way better than trying to call them directly. Check the video demo to see how it works.

Does anyone know if the weekly benefit amount changes or is it the same every week?

0 coins

Donna Cline

•

Your weekly benefit amount stays the same unless you have earnings from work that week. If you work and earn money, it gets deducted from your benefit amount based on Washington's earnings deduction formula.

•

What if I only work a few hours? Do I still get some unemployment?

0 coins

Donna Cline

•

Yes, you can have partial earnings and still receive partial unemployment benefits. You just need to report all your earnings honestly on your weekly claim.

This is so confusing compared to other states I thought unemployment was just automatic once approved

0 coins

Every state has its own system. Washington ESD requires active weekly participation to continue receiving benefits. It's designed to ensure you're still unemployed and actively seeking work.

Yeah it's annoying but I guess it makes sense. Prevents people from just collecting without looking for jobs.

Pro tip: set a reminder on your phone to file your weekly claim every Sunday. I almost forgot a few times and it would have been a nightmare to deal with Washington ESD about late filing.

Good idea! I'm definitely going to do that. Better safe than sorry.

I do mine every Sunday morning with my coffee. Made it part of my routine.

Smart. I procrastinated once and ended up stressing about it all week.

0 coins

How long does it usually take for the first payment? I filed my initial claim 2 weeks ago and did my first weekly claim last Sunday but haven't gotten paid yet.

0 coins

Initial claims often take longer to process, especially if your claim needs adjudication for any reason. You should see payment status information in your Washington ESD account.

0 coins

It just says 'pending' and has been that way for days. Should I be worried?

•

That's exactly what happened to me. Took forever to get anyone on the phone to explain what was going on. Claimyr was the only thing that worked.

0 coins

I might have to try that if this doesn't resolve soon. Getting really stressed about bills.

0 coins

The weekly filing system actually makes sense when you think about it. Your employment situation can change week to week, so they need current information to determine if you're still eligible.

True, but the system could be more user-friendly. Half the questions are confusing and the website crashes sometimes.

0 coins

I agree the technology could be better, but the concept is sound from a policy perspective.

Make sure you keep records of everything - every job application, every weekly claim filing, all your documentation. If something goes wrong you'll need proof of what you did.

Lucas Parker

•

What kind of records should I keep for job searches?

0 coins

Landon Morgan

•

Company name, position applied for, date, method of application. I keep a simple spreadsheet with all this info.

Screenshots of your online applications are good too, in case websites change or job postings disappear.
