How often do you get unemployment payments from Washington ESD?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with Washington ESD and I'm confused about the payment schedule. Do they pay weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly? I filed my weekly claim yesterday but I'm not sure when to expect money. Also do I need to file something every week to keep getting paid? This is all new to me and I want to make sure I don't mess anything up.

Washington ESD pays weekly, but you have to file your weekly claim every week to get paid. The payments usually come 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim if there are no issues with your claim.

•Thanks! So I need to file every single week? What happens if I forget one week?

Grace Lee
•Yes every week or you won't get paid for that week. You can usually file late claims but it's better to stay on schedule.

weekly payments but only if you file your weekly claim on time. I usually file mine on Sunday mornings and get paid by Wednesday.

•Same here, Sunday filing and Wednesday deposits. Very predictable once you get in the routine.

The payment schedule is weekly, but there are some important details to understand. You must file your weekly claim every week between Sunday and the following Saturday. Most people file on Sunday when the system opens up for the new week. Your payment will typically arrive 2-3 business days after filing, assuming your claim is in good standing and there are no adjudication issues. If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to clarify payment timing, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me reach an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•What kind of adjudication issues could delay payments? My claim shows approved but I'm worried something could go wrong.

Evan Kalinowski
•Common issues include discrepancies in work search activities, unreported work hours, or identity verification problems. As long as you're reporting everything accurately you should be fine.

•Never heard of Claimyr before but might check it out if I have issues. Getting through to Washington ESD by phone is basically impossible.

You file weekly claims but get paid every two weeks (biweekly). So you'll file your weekly claim every Sunday, but Washington ESD processes payments twice a month. Your first payment usually takes 2-3 weeks after filing your initial claim, assuming there are no issues with adjudication.

•Thanks! So I need to keep filing every week even if I'm not getting paid weekly?
0 coins
Isabella Brown
•Exactly! You must file your weekly claim every week to maintain eligibility, even though payments come biweekly.

The payment schedule can be confusing. Washington ESD pays on Tuesdays and Fridays typically, but it depends on when you filed your weekly claim and if there are any holds on your account.
0 coins
Jacob Smithson
•What kind of holds could there be?

Maya Patel
•Adjudication issues, job search verification, identity verification - lots of things can delay payments unfortunately.

I've been getting my payments regularly but had trouble reaching Washington ESD when I had questions about my claim status. If you run into issues contacting them, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helped when I was stuck in phone trees.

•How much does that cost? I'm already tight on money waiting for my unemployment.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Might be useful if I can't get through on my own.

been on unemployment for 6 months now, payments come every other tuesday for me. sometimes friday if there's a holiday or something. you gotta be patient with the first payment though, mine took almost a month

•A whole month?? I was hoping it would be faster than that.

•yeah it sucks but thats normal especially if they need to verify anything about your claim

I've been on unemployment for 6 weeks now and the pattern is very consistent. File weekly claim Sunday, get paid Wednesday. Just make sure you do your job search activities because they will audit those.
0 coins
William Rivera
•How many job search activities do I need to do each week? And what counts as a valid activity?
0 coins
Jasmine Quinn
•You need 3 job search activities per week. Applications count, so do networking events, job fairs, skills training. Keep detailed records.

To clarify the payment schedule more specifically: Washington ESD processes payments twice per week (Tuesdays and Fridays). Which day you get paid depends on the last digit of your SSN and when you file your weekly claim. But remember, you're still only eligible for payments covering the weeks you've filed claims for.

Jacob Smithson
•The SSN thing is new to me - where can I find out which day I'll get paid?
0 coins
Isabella Brown
•Check your eServices account dashboard - it should show your payment schedule once your claim is processed.

•Mine shows Tuesday payments and it's been consistent for the past few months.

ugh the weekly filing is such a pain but you HAVE to do it or no money. I missed one week last month and had to jump through hoops to get that payment. not worth the stress
0 coins
William Rivera
•What hoops did you have to jump through? Was it hard to file the late claim?
0 coins
Oscar Murphy
•had to call washington esd and explain why I missed it. took forever to get through. just don't miss the weekly filing deadline

One thing to watch out for - if you work any hours during a week, even just a few, you need to report that on your weekly claim. It might reduce your payment but you won't get in trouble for overpayment later.

Nora Bennett
•This is super important! I got an overpayment notice because I didn't report some part-time work from months ago. Now I owe them back money.
0 coins
William Rivera
•Good to know, I'll make sure to report any work even if it's just a few hours.

This is all so confusing! I thought unemployment was just automatic money every week. Now I'm reading about weekly claims, adjudication, job search requirements... I'm starting to panic that I did something wrong when I filed.
0 coins
Isabella Brown
•Don't panic! The system is complicated but manageable. As long as you file your weekly claims on time and meet the job search requirements, you should be fine.
0 coins
Emma Garcia
•What are the job search requirements exactly?
0 coins
Isabella Brown
•You need to make 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. You can do this through WorkSourceWA or track it yourself.

The biweekly thing threw me off too when I first started. I kept expecting money every week since I was filing weekly. It's basically like this: Week 1 file claim, Week 2 file claim and get paid for Week 1, Week 3 file claim, Week 4 file claim and get paid for Week 2&3, etc.
0 coins
Jacob Smithson
•That actually makes sense when you explain it that way. Thanks!

•Yeah that's a good way to think about it. There's always that lag between filing and getting paid.

The weekly payment system works well once you understand it. Just remember the weekly claim filing opens Sunday at 6 AM and closes Saturday at midnight. Most people develop a routine of filing the same day each week.

•I set a reminder on my phone for every Sunday morning. Never want to forget and miss a payment.
0 coins
William Rivera
•That's a good idea, I'll set up a reminder too. Thanks for the tip about the filing window.
0 coins
Layla Mendes
One thing to watch out for - if you miss filing a weekly claim, you won't get paid for that week even if you file the next week. Washington ESD doesn't automatically backfill missed claims.
0 coins
Jacob Smithson
•What if I forget or have technical issues with the website?
0 coins
Layla Mendes
•You can sometimes file late claims but there's usually a good reason requirement. Better to set a reminder for Sunday evenings.

Aiden Rodríguez
•This is another reason that Claimyr service I mentioned can be helpful - if you need to talk to someone about missed claims or technical issues.

Been collecting for 4 months now. The system is actually pretty reliable if you follow the rules. File every week, report all work and income, do your job searches. The money comes like clockwork.

Aurora Lacasse
•How much do you usually get paid? Is it based on your previous salary?
0 coins
Daniel Washington
•It's based on your earnings history from previous employers. Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount when they approve your claim.

Anthony Young
I was confused about the payment timing too when I started. The key thing is that Washington ESD processes claims in batches, so everyone who files on Sunday typically gets paid on the same days (Tuesday/Wednesday usually).
0 coins
William Rivera
•That makes sense. So if I file later in the week my payment might be delayed?
0 coins
Anthony Young
•Exactly. Filing early in the week gets you into the next processing batch. Filing late might push you to the following week's batch.

WASHINGTON ESD IS THE WORST. I've been waiting 5 weeks for my first payment and every time I call they just say 'your claim is being processed' or hang up on me. The whole system is broken!!
0 coins
Isabella Brown
•5 weeks is definitely longer than normal. There might be an adjudication issue with your claim that needs to be resolved.
0 coins
Aria Park
•How am I supposed to resolve it if I can't even talk to anyone?!

Aiden Rodríguez
•That's exactly the frustration Claimyr helps with - getting through to actual agents instead of getting hung up on.

word of advice - if you ever have problems with payments or need to talk to someone at washington esd, I used this service called claimyr that actually got me through to an agent. way better than trying to call yourself and getting busy signals all day

For what it's worth, once your claim is established and running smoothly, the biweekly payments are pretty reliable. It's just that initial setup period that can be rocky with all the verification requirements.

The weekly payment schedule is consistent but you need to be aware that holidays can sometimes delay payments by a day. Also, if Washington ESD updates their system (usually on weekends), that can occasionally affect timing.
0 coins
William Rivera
•Are there any holidays coming up that might affect payments? I want to plan my budget accordingly.
0 coins
Matthew Sanchez
•Federal holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day can cause delays. Washington ESD usually posts notices about holiday schedules on their website.

Also remember that the payment amount might vary slightly depending on if you worked any part-time hours during the week. You need to report ALL work and earnings when you file your weekly claim.
0 coins
Jacob Smithson
•Even just a few hours of work?
0 coins
Chloe Boulanger
•Yes, even one hour. They'll calculate how it affects your weekly benefit amount. Being honest prevents overpayment issues later.

been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and the payment timing never changes. file weekly claim, wait 2-3 days, money shows up. as long as your claim is clean you can count on it

Quick tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Getting a debit card in the mail takes forever and has fees. Direct deposit is faster and free.

To summarize for the OP: File weekly claims every Sunday, get paid biweekly (every 2 weeks) usually on Tuesday or Friday depending on your SSN, first payment takes 2-4 weeks typically, and make sure you're doing your job searches. The system works but it's not intuitive at first.

One more thing - keep all your documentation organized (job search logs, any correspondence from ESD, work history, etc.). If any issues come up you'll need that stuff quickly.

Don't forget that you can check your payment history and claim status anytime through the eServices portal at secure.esd.wa.gov. Sometimes that answers questions faster than calling.

Just want to add that if you're on standby status or have any special circumstances, the payment schedule might be different. But for regular UI claims, everything mentioned here is accurate.

One more thing about payments - they come via direct deposit if you set that up, or debit card if you didn't. Direct deposit is faster and more reliable in my experience.

William Rivera
•I think I set up direct deposit when I filed. How do I check to make sure it's set up correctly?

•Log into your Washington ESD account and check the payment method section. You can change it there if needed.

•The debit card option isn't bad either, but direct deposit definitely hits your account faster.

just want to add that if you ever need to reach washington esd about payment issues, claimyr.com really works. i was skeptical at first but they got me through to someone in like 20 minutes when i'd been trying to call for weeks myself

To summarize for the original poster: Washington ESD pays weekly, you must file weekly claims to receive payment, payments typically arrive 2-3 business days after filing, and you need to maintain job search requirements. It's a straightforward system once you get the hang of it.
