How often do you get paid for unemployment in Washington ESD?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with Washington ESD and I'm confused about the payment schedule. Do they pay weekly, biweekly, or monthly? I've been searching everywhere but can't find a clear answer. My claim was approved but I haven't received any payments yet and it's been about 10 days since I filed my first weekly claim. Is this normal timing? I really need to know when to expect money so I can budget accordingly.

Washington ESD pays unemployment benefits weekly, but you have to file your weekly claim every week to get paid. The payments usually come 2-3 business days after you submit your weekly claim if there are no issues.

•Thanks! So I need to keep filing every week even though my claim is approved? I thought it was automatic after approval.

•Yes, you have to file every single week to certify that you're still unemployed and looking for work. It's not automatic at all.

the payments are weekly but sometimes they get delayed especially if your claim goes into adjudication or if there's a holiday. i've been waiting 3 weeks for mine because they're reviewing my job separation

•Oh no, 3 weeks?? How do you even survive that long without income?

•it's been really tough, had to borrow money from family. the waiting is the worst part because you never know how long it will take

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your payment status, I had success using Claimyr.com recently. They have a service that helps you actually reach a live agent instead of getting stuck in the phone system. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me hours of calling.

•Is that legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•Yeah it's legitimate. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Much better than calling hundreds of times and getting hung up on.

•I might have to check that out too, I've been trying to reach them for 2 weeks about my adjudication

WEEKLY PAYMENTS BUT ONLY IF YOU JUMP THROUGH ALL THEIR HOOPS!!! You have to file weekly claims, do job searches, report any work, and pray nothing triggers their stupid adjudication process. I've been dealing with this system for months and it's absolutely broken.

•What kind of job search requirements are there? Nobody explained this to me.

•You have to do 3 job search activities per week and log them in WorkSourceWA. If you don't do it they'll stop your payments.

•The job search requirement is actually important. You need to keep detailed records of your search activities or they can disqualify you.

For new claims it can take 2-4 weeks before you see your first payment even after approval. There's always some kind of verification process or waiting period. The weekly payment schedule only starts after everything is completely processed.

•2-4 weeks?! How are people supposed to pay rent and buy food during that time?

•that's exactly what happened to me, took almost a month before i got my first check

•Unfortunately that's just how the system works. They have to verify everything before releasing payments.

also make sure you're checking your SecureAccess Washington account regularly because sometimes they put holds on payments and don't tell you. i found out i had an issue only by logging in and seeing a message

•Good tip! I'll start checking that daily. This whole process is so confusing.

Just to clarify the payment timeline: You file your weekly claim on Sunday (or whenever your week ends), Washington ESD processes it Monday-Tuesday, and if approved, the payment is issued Tuesday-Wednesday. Most people get their money by Thursday if they have direct deposit.

•This is super helpful! I wish they explained the timeline this clearly on their website.

One more thing about Claimyr - I used them specifically to get through and ask about payment delays. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim and how long it would take to resolve. Way better than wondering and stressing about it.

•How much does that service cost though? I'm already broke waiting for unemployment.

•It's worth checking their site for current info. For me it was worth it just to get answers instead of being in limbo.

I think there might be some confusion here. From what I understand, Washington ESD pays benefits weekly, but the actual deposit schedule depends on your bank. Some people get paid on Wednesday, others Thursday or Friday.

Isabella Martin
•That's correct. The state issues payments on the same schedule but individual banks process them at different speeds.

Ava Hernandez
•Ah okay that makes sense. I have direct deposit set up so hopefully it'll be faster.

Just wanted to add my experience - I've been getting weekly payments for 8 weeks now with no issues. The key is filing your weekly claims on time every single week and keeping up with job search requirements. Once you get into the routine it's pretty straightforward.

•That's reassuring to hear! Hopefully my experience will be that smooth too.

The WorkSourceWA job search thing is really important. You have to log 3 job search activities every week or they'll audit you and potentially stop payments. Make sure you understand those requirements from the beginning.

•Where do I find information about the specific job search requirements?

•Check the Washington ESD website under job search requirements. They have a whole section explaining what counts as valid job search activities.

i tried that claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked! got through to an agent in like 10 minutes instead of calling for hours. they explained my payment delay was due to a routine verification that should clear up this week

•Okay I'm definitely going to try that if I don't get my payment soon. Thanks for the update!

One thing to watch out for - if you have any type of pension or retirement income, it can affect your weekly benefit amount. They don't always explain this clearly upfront but it can reduce your payments.

The waiting period for first payments is brutal but hang in there. Once the payments start coming they're pretty reliable as long as you stay compliant with all the requirements. Just remember to file every week no matter what.

•Thanks for the encouragement! I'll make sure to file every week religiously.
