When do I get unemployment benefits after filing my NYS Department of Labor claim?
Filed my unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor about a week ago and I'm still waiting to hear anything back. My account on the website just shows 'claim processing' but doesn't give me any timeline. When should I expect to actually start getting payments? I've been doing the weekly claims but haven't received a single dollar yet. Really need to know what's normal here because I have rent due soon.

It typically takes 2-3 weeks for your first payment after filing your initial claim with NYS Department of Labor. The first week is usually a waiting week anyway, so you won't get paid for that. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while it's processing or you'll lose those weeks.

•Thanks! So even though I filed last week I should still expect another week or two before seeing money?

mine took almost a month because they had to verify my identity or something, but once it got approved all the back payments came at once

•That's scary, how did you find out there was an identity issue? Did they send you a letter or email?

The processing time depends on whether your claim needs adjudication. Simple claims with clear separation from employer usually process within 2-3 weeks. If there are any questions about your separation reason, work search requirements, or eligibility, it goes into adjudication which can take 4-6 weeks or longer. Check your online account regularly for any requests for additional information.

•How do I know if my claim is in adjudication? My account doesn't really explain what 'claim processing' means.

•If it's in adjudication, you'll usually see a status that specifically says 'adjudication in progress' rather than just 'processing.' You can also try calling NYS Department of Labor but the wait times are brutal.

I had such a hard time getting through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor when my claim was stuck. Ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual agent who could check my claim status. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Never heard of that before, does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit, I was skeptical too but I was desperate to find out why my claim was taking so long. Worth it just to get actual information instead of guessing.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE! I've been waiting 6 weeks and still nothing. They make it impossible to reach anyone and the website is useless. Meanwhile bills keep coming and they act like we're all trying to scam them.
