How long does unemployment take to get approved through NYS Department of Labor?
I just filed my unemployment claim last Monday and I'm wondering how long it usually takes to actually start getting payments? I know they say to keep filing weekly claims but I haven't heard anything back yet. My last job ended two weeks ago and I'm starting to stress about rent coming up. Does anyone know the typical timeline for NYS Department of Labor to process claims? I didn't have any issues with my application that I know of.

Usually takes about 2-3 weeks if there are no complications with your claim. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if you haven't heard back yet - that's really important. The NYS Department of Labor will backdate your payments to when you first became unemployed if everything gets approved.

•Thanks, that's reassuring! I've been filing the weekly claims so hopefully that helps speed things up.

The processing time can vary significantly depending on several factors. If your claim requires adjudication (which happens when there are questions about your separation from work), it can take 4-6 weeks or longer. For straightforward claims, 2-3 weeks is typical. You should receive a monetary determination letter first, then an eligibility determination. Keep filing those weekly claims and check your my.ny.gov account regularly for updates.

•What exactly triggers adjudication? I was laid off due to company downsizing so I thought that would be pretty straightforward.

•Layoffs due to downsizing are usually straightforward, but sometimes the NYS Department of Labor just needs to verify the details with your former employer. Don't worry too much unless you see 'adjudication in progress' status on your account.

I had such a hard time getting through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor when my claim was taking forever. Ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real person. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really helped me get answers about why my claim was delayed.

•Never heard of that before but honestly anything that helps get through to NYS Department of Labor sounds worth trying. The phone lines are impossible.

The whole system is a joke honestly. They make you wait weeks while you're struggling to pay bills and then act like they're doing you a favor. I've been waiting 3 weeks and still nothing. Meanwhile my landlord doesn't care that NYS Department of Labor is slow.

•I feel you. The stress of waiting is almost worse than being unemployed. Hang in there.

I'm going through the same thing right now - filed my claim about 10 days ago and the waiting is nerve-wracking! What helped me was calling the customer service line early in the morning (like right at 8am when they open) - I actually got through after about 45 minutes on hold. The rep told me that as long as I keep filing my weekly claims and there are no red flags, I should expect to hear something within the next week or two. She also mentioned that the first payment usually comes about a week after you get your approval letter. Definitely keep an eye on your my.ny.gov account for any status updates. We're all in this together!
