How long before unemployment starts paying out after filing claim with NYS Department of Labor?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through the NYS Department of Labor website last Tuesday and I'm wondering how long before unemployment starts coming in? I know I have to do the weekly claims but when do the actual payments begin? My landlord is already asking about next month's rent and I'm getting stressed about timing. Has anyone recently filed and can tell me what to expect?

It usually takes 2-3 weeks from when you file your initial claim until you see your first payment, assuming there are no issues with your application. You need to keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval. The NYS Department of Labor processes everything in order so don't skip any weeks or you'll delay things further.

•Thanks! I've been doing the weekly claims religiously. Just nervous about the waiting period.

•What ended up being the issue? I'm worried mine might get held up too.

The NYS Department of Labor typically processes straightforward claims within 2-3 weeks if everything is in order. However, if your claim goes into adjudication (which happens when they need to verify employment details or investigate the reason for separation), it can take 4-6 weeks or longer. Check your account regularly for any messages requiring action.

•How do I know if my claim went into adjudication? Is there a specific status I should look for?

•Yes, it will show 'adjudication in progress' or similar wording in your account. You might also get a message asking for additional documentation.

I had such a hard time getting through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor when my claim was delayed. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr that calls for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Might be worth it if I run into problems.

The whole system is a joke honestly. They make you jump through hoops and then drag their feet processing claims. Meanwhile people can't pay bills. But yeah typically 2-3 weeks if you're lucky and they don't find some random reason to hold up your claim.

Keep filing those weekly claims no matter what! Even if your initial claim is still pending. That's super important.

I went through this same process about 3 months ago. Filed on a Wednesday and got my first payment exactly 16 days later (so just over 2 weeks). The key is making sure you have all your employment documentation ready in case they ask for it. Also, set up direct deposit if you haven't already - it's faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive in the mail. Don't stress too much about the timing, just keep doing those weekly certifications and check your online account regularly for any requests for additional info.
