Filed NYS Department of Labor unemployment claim on Sunday - when will payment arrive?

I submitted my initial unemployment application through the NYS Department of Labor website this past Sunday evening. Everything went through and I got a confirmation number, but I'm trying to figure out the timeline for when I might actually see money in my account. I know there's usually a waiting period but I'm not sure how long that is or when the payment schedule starts. Does anyone know how this works? I'm getting nervous about my rent payment next week.

There's a one week waiting period for new claims, so you won't get paid for that first week you file. After that you need to file your weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. The payment schedule depends on when you file your weekly claims - if you file on Sunday the payment usually processes by Wednesday.

So I won't get anything for this first week at all? That's rough. When do I file my first weekly claim then?

yea the waiting week sucks but that's how it works. you should be able to file your first weekly claim this coming sunday for the week you just had. then if everything goes smooth you'd get paid wednesday or thursday

The waiting week is unpaid but it's required by NYS Department of Labor. You'll file weekly claims every Sunday for the previous week. Payment timing varies - if you have direct deposit it's usually 2-3 business days after filing your weekly claim. If you get the debit card it can take longer initially. Make sure your claim doesn't go into adjudication or you'll have delays.

What would cause it to go into adjudication? I answered all the questions honestly when I filed.

Common reasons include issues with your separation from work, questions about your availability to work, or if they need to verify your employment history. Just keep filing your weekly claims and watch for any messages in your account.

I've been trying to call NYS Department of Labor for three days about my claim status and can't get through! The phone system is impossible. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

I had the same problem last month until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that calls NYS Department of Labor for you and gets you connected to an actual person. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

The waiting period can definitely be stressful when you're worried about bills. One thing to keep in mind is that you should start looking for that first weekly claim certification to become available in your online account - it usually shows up on Sunday mornings. Make sure you complete it before the deadline (usually by the following Saturday). Also, if you set up direct deposit during your initial application, that will speed up payments once they start. The debit card option can add extra days to your first payment. Hang in there!
