How long does it take to get unemployment after you file with NYS Department of Labor?

Filed my unemployment claim last Thursday and wondering what the typical timeline looks like. My employer laid me off due to budget cuts and I submitted everything online through my.ny.gov. Haven't heard anything back yet except the confirmation email. Getting anxious about when I might see the first payment since rent is due next week. Anyone know how long NYS Department of Labor usually takes to process new claims?

Typically takes 2-3 weeks for your first payment if there are no issues with your claim. You should receive a monetary determination letter within 7-10 business days telling you your weekly benefit amount. After that, you'll need to file your first weekly claim to get the payment process started. Keep checking your my.ny.gov account for updates.

Thanks! Do I wait for the monetary determination before filing weekly claims or can I start filing them right away?

mine took about 10 days total but that was pretty lucky... some people wait way longer if their claim goes into adjudication

The key is making sure you file your weekly claims starting the week after you become unemployed, even if you haven't received your monetary determination yet. NYS Department of Labor requires this to establish your claim timeline. If your claim is straightforward with no eligibility questions, you're looking at roughly 2 weeks. However, if there are any issues - like questions about why you left your job or income verification problems - it could go into adjudication which adds several more weeks.

What exactly triggers adjudication? I'm worried my claim might get delayed because my last employer was kind of disorganized with their records.

Been waiting 3 weeks and still nothing!! Called NYS Department of Labor like 50 times and can't get through to anyone. This system is BROKEN. How are people supposed to pay bills while waiting this long???

I had the same frustration trying to reach NYS Department of Labor by phone. What worked for me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they actually got me connected to an agent who could check my claim status. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

Just want to say hang in there - I know the waiting is stressful. My first claim took about 12 days and then payments started coming weekly after that. Make sure you're doing your job search requirements too because they'll ask for that documentation later.

I'm in a similar situation - just filed my claim this week after being laid off. Reading through everyone's experiences here is really helpful but also nerve-wracking! Does anyone know if there's a way to check if your claim is progressing normally or if it's gone into adjudication? I keep logging into my.ny.gov but it just shows "claim filed" status. Also wondering if anyone has tips for the weekly certification process - want to make sure I don't mess anything up that could delay payments further.
