When does unemployment pay - NYS Department of Labor payment schedule questions
I just got approved for unemployment benefits last week and I'm trying to figure out when the actual payments come through. I filed my first weekly claim on Tuesday but my bank account is still empty. Does anyone know the typical schedule for when NYS Department of Labor actually sends out the money? I've been looking all over the my.ny.gov site but can't find clear info about payment timing. Really need to know so I can plan for rent and bills.

NYS Department of Labor typically processes payments within 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim, assuming there are no issues with your claim. Payments are usually released on Wednesday or Thursday if you file early in the week. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week by the Sunday deadline to avoid delays.

•Thanks! I filed Tuesday morning so hopefully I'll see something by Thursday or Friday then. Do they send direct deposit or is it a debit card?

It depends on what payment method you selected when you set up your claim. NYS Department of Labor offers direct deposit which is faster, or they can send payments to a KeyBank debit card. Direct deposit usually hits your account 1-2 days after processing, while the debit card can take an extra day or two.

just a heads up - sometimes the first payment takes longer because they have to verify everything is set up correctly in their system. my first payment took almost a week but after that it was pretty regular

•That makes me feel better, I was starting to worry something went wrong with my claim

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to check on your payment status, I had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was stuck in phone queue hell for weeks before trying it, and they got me connected within minutes to resolve my payment delay issue.

•How much does that cost though? I'm already broke waiting for my unemployment money

•It's worth checking out their site for pricing details, but honestly when you're waiting for hundreds of dollars in benefits it was worth it for me to get answers quickly rather than waste more weeks calling

The whole NYS Department of Labor payment system is a joke honestly. They take forever to process anything and never give you straight answers about timing. I've been waiting 3 weeks for a payment that should have been automatic.

I feel your pain @Sofia Torres - the waiting is the worst part! Just went through this myself a couple months ago. One thing that helped me was setting up text alerts through the my.ny.gov portal so I got notifications when my payment status changed. Also, if you haven't already, double check that your direct deposit info is correct in your profile - I had a friend whose payments got delayed because there was a typo in her routing number. The first payment really does take longer than the rest, but once it starts flowing it gets more predictable. Hang in there!
