How often does NYS Department of Labor unemployment pay out benefits?
I just got approved for unemployment after being laid off from my warehouse job last month. The NYS Department of Labor website isn't super clear about the payment schedule. Do they pay weekly, biweekly, or what? And when should I expect my first payment to hit my account? I filed my first weekly claim on Sunday but my debit card is still showing zero balance.

NYS Department of Labor pays unemployment benefits weekly, but there's always a one-week waiting period for your first payment. So if you just filed your first weekly claim, you won't see money until after you file your second one. The payments usually hit your account on Wednesday if you're using direct deposit, Thursday if you have the debit card.

•Ok that makes sense about the waiting week. So I should see my first payment next Wednesday then? Thanks for explaining that!

The payment schedule is weekly as others mentioned. You file your weekly claim every Sunday through Saturday for the previous week. Payments are processed Tuesday nights and typically available Wednesday morning for direct deposit or Thursday for the debit card. Keep in mind that holidays can delay payments by a day or two.

•What about if there's an issue with your claim? I had to submit additional documents and my payment got delayed for 3 weeks. Do they backpay you for those weeks?

•Yes, if your claim gets delayed due to adjudication or document requirements, you'll receive backpay for all eligible weeks once the issue is resolved. Just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even during the delay.

NYS Department of Labor pays unemployment benefits weekly, usually within 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim. Most people file on Sunday and get paid by Wednesday. You can choose direct deposit or the KeyBank debit card. The waiting week is unpaid - that's just how the system works unfortunately.

•Thanks! So if I file my weekly claim every Sunday I should expect money by Wednesday each week? That's actually better than I thought.

I was having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to check on my payment status when mine got delayed. Kept getting busy signals for weeks. Someone here mentioned using Claimyr to get through their phone lines faster - you can check it out at claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Basically helps you get connected to an actual agent instead of sitting on hold forever.

•Never heard of that service but honestly anything is better than calling the regular number. I literally called 47 times last week and never got through.

The payment timing can vary depending on your bank too. I have Chase and usually get my deposit on Tuesday night, but my friend with a credit union doesn't see hers until Thursday sometimes. Direct deposit is definitely faster than waiting for the debit card to load.

•Wait, I thought everyone had to use the KeyBank card? Can you really do direct deposit to your regular bank account instead?

•Yes! You can set up direct deposit in your my.ny.gov account. Go to payment method and add your bank account info. Much better than dealing with ATM fees on the KeyBank card.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to check on payment delays or set up direct deposit, I had good luck using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They actually got me connected to a real person at the unemployment office when I couldn't get through after weeks of trying. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of redialing busy signals.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money waiting for my first payment.

•It was worth it for me since I was stuck for weeks, but check their site for current info. The peace of mind of actually talking to someone was huge when my payments got held up.

The whole system is a joke honestly. They say weekly payments but then half the time there's some random delay or your claim goes into adjudication for no reason. I've been waiting 2 months for them to process my appeal and still haven't seen a dime.

•That sounds awful! Hope you get it sorted out soon. Makes me nervous about what could go wrong with mine.

Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week. I missed one week thinking I could file late and it messed up my whole payment schedule. Had to wait an extra week to get back on track.

The NYS Department of Labor system is so confusing for first timers! I remember being lost too. But once you get into the routine of filing every Sunday and knowing when to expect payment it becomes automatic. Just don't forget to keep doing your job searches for the work search log.

•Yeah I've been applying to jobs every day anyway but I need to start keeping better track of everything for their requirements.

I went through the same thing when I first got approved! The waiting week threw me off too - I kept checking my card balance expecting money that wasn't coming yet. Once you get past that first week though, the payments are pretty reliable. I've been getting mine every Wednesday for the past 6 months. Just make sure you have your direct deposit set up if you haven't already, it's way more convenient than the KeyBank card.

•Thanks for the reassurance! I was starting to worry something was wrong when I didn't see anything yet. Good to know the Wednesday payments are consistent once you get going. I should probably look into setting up direct deposit - do you know if there are fees with the KeyBank card?

•Yeah there are definitely fees with the KeyBank card - ATM withdrawals cost like $1.50 each time unless you use their specific ATMs. Plus some merchants charge extra fees for debit transactions. Direct deposit is definitely the way to go if you can set it up. You just log into your my.ny.gov account and add your bank routing and account numbers under payment methods. Takes a few days to process the change but then you get your money faster and without any fees.

I've been on NYS unemployment for about 8 months now and can confirm what others are saying - it's weekly payments, usually hitting your account on Wednesdays if you file your weekly claim on Sunday. The one-week waiting period is standard for everyone's first payment, so don't panic when you don't see money right away. One thing I'd add is to make sure you answer all the weekly certification questions accurately - even small mistakes can trigger a review that delays your payments. And definitely consider switching to direct deposit if you haven't already - the KeyBank debit card has annoying fees and sometimes takes an extra day to load your benefits.

•This is really helpful info! I had no idea about the weekly certification questions being so important. What kind of mistakes should I watch out for when filling those out? I want to make sure I don't accidentally trigger any delays since I really need these payments to come through consistently.
