How often do you get an unemployment check from NYS Department of Labor?
Hey everyone, probably a dumb question but I just filed my first UI claim last week and I'm trying to figure out the payment schedule. How often do you actually get an unemployment check from NYS Department of Labor? Is it weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly? I know I have to do the weekly claim thing but does that mean I get paid every week? My old job paid bi-weekly so I'm used to that schedule. Also do they direct deposit or send actual checks? Thanks for any help!

Unemployment benefits in New York are paid weekly, but you need to file your weekly claim every week to continue receiving payments. You won't get paid for the first week (that's your waiting week), but after that you should receive payments weekly as long as you're eligible and file your claims on time. Most people set up direct deposit through their my.ny.gov account - it's much faster than waiting for a paper check.

•Oh okay so I file weekly but get paid weekly too once it starts? That's actually better than I thought. How do I set up the direct deposit?

You get paid weekly if you file your weekly claims on time. BUT there's always delays with NYS Department of Labor. I've been filing for 6 weeks and sometimes my payment comes Tuesday, sometimes Thursday, sometimes not at all that week. The system is a mess and they never explain why payments get delayed.

•Same here! My payments are so inconsistent. One week I got paid on Monday, next week it was Friday. Makes budgeting impossible.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about payment schedules or set up direct deposit, I had good luck using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They actually get you connected to a real person instead of being on hold forever. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Was super helpful when I needed to verify my payment method.

•Never heard of that but might be worth trying. I've been calling the main number for three days straight and keep getting disconnected.

just started getting mine and its every week after the first week like they said. make sure you certify every week or you'll miss payments. learned that the hard way lol

The weekly payment thing confused me too when I first started. You file your weekly claim (usually on Sunday-Tuesday) and then if everything looks good, the payment gets released a few days later. I always file on Sunday morning and usually see the direct deposit hit my account by Wednesday. Just make sure you answer all the questions correctly about work search and any income you might have had that week.

•Thanks! This is really helpful. I was worried I'd have to wait a whole month for my first payment.

Welcome to the unemployment club! I've been dealing with NYS DOL for about 3 months now. Yes, you file weekly and get paid weekly (after the waiting week), but here's what nobody tells you upfront - set up direct deposit ASAP through your online account. Paper checks can take forever and sometimes get lost in the mail. Also, keep detailed records of every weekly certification you submit because if there are any issues, you'll need to reference dates and what you reported. The system can be glitchy so screenshot your confirmations. Good luck!

•Great advice about keeping records! I'm definitely going to screenshot everything. Quick question - when you set up direct deposit, does it go into effect right away or does it take a few weeks to kick in? I want to make sure I don't miss any payments while it's processing.
