How often do you get unemployment checks from NYS Department of Labor?

I just started receiving UI benefits and I'm confused about the payment schedule. I certified for my first week last Sunday but haven't gotten anything yet. Do the unemployment checks come weekly or every two weeks? And what day do they usually hit your account? I'm trying to budget and need to know when to expect payments from NYS Department of Labor.

NYS Department of Labor pays unemployment benefits weekly, but there's usually a one-week lag between when you certify and when you receive payment. So if you certified last Sunday, you should see the payment in your account by Wednesday or Thursday this week. Payments typically process Tuesday night and hit accounts Wednesday morning.

That's a relief! I was worried something was wrong with my claim. So I'll certify every Sunday and get paid the following Wednesday?

yeah its weekly but sometimes it takes longer if theres an issue with your claim or if you miss something on the weekly certification

Just to clarify - you get paid weekly but you have to certify every week to keep the payments coming. If you miss a week of certification, you won't get paid for that week. The payments are usually direct deposit unless you requested a debit card from NYS Department of Labor.

Wait, what happens if you're late certifying? Like if you miss the Sunday deadline but do it on Monday?

You can still certify late but your payment might be delayed by a few days. NYS Department of Labor recommends certifying between 6 AM Sunday and 7:30 PM the following Saturday for that week.

I've been getting mine every Wednesday like clockwork for 3 months now. The key is making sure you certify on time and answer all the questions correctly about work searches and any income you earned that week.

Ugh the whole system is so confusing! I had trouble reaching someone at NYS Department of Labor when my payment was delayed last month. Spent hours on hold just to find out I had answered one question wrong on my weekly claim. If anyone else has trouble getting through to them, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent in like 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works.

That sounds too good to be true. How much does something like that cost?

It was worth it for me when I was panicking about my delayed payment. Much better than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

Same situation here! Started my claim two weeks ago and was confused about the timing. Got my first payment yesterday and it was exactly what the NYS Department of Labor calculator said I'd get.

The weekly schedule is pretty straightforward once you get used to it. I've been on unemployment for about 6 weeks now and here's what I've learned: You certify every Sunday (I usually do it Sunday morning to get it out of the way), and then the payment shows up in my account every Wednesday around 9 AM. The amount stays consistent as long as you don't have any earnings to report. One tip - set up direct deposit if you haven't already because it's much faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive in the mail. Also keep track of your work search activities because you'll need to report those when you certify each week.
