How often do unemployment checks come from NYS Department of Labor?
Just got approved for unemployment benefits after waiting 3 weeks in adjudication and I'm wondering how often the payments actually come? I know I have to file weekly claims but does that mean I get paid every week or is it different? My rent is due next week so trying to figure out the timing. Also do they direct deposit or mail checks? Sorry if this is a basic question but the NYS Department of Labor website isn't super clear about the actual payment schedule.

You get paid weekly as long as you file your weekly claim certification on time. The payment comes a few days after you certify, usually Tuesday or Wednesday if you file on Sunday/Monday. Set up direct deposit ASAP because paper checks take way longer to arrive.

•Thank you! How do I set up direct deposit? Is that in the my.ny.gov portal?

The NYS Department of Labor pays unemployment benefits weekly, but there's always a one-week waiting period for your first payment. After that, you'll receive payments within 2-3 business days of filing your weekly claim. Direct deposit is much faster than waiting for paper checks - you can set it up in your online account under payment preferences.

•Wait there's a waiting period? I've been filing for 2 weeks and haven't gotten anything yet, is that normal?

•Yes, the first week you're eligible is unpaid - it's called the waiting week. So if you were approved and started filing, your first actual payment would be for the second week you filed. Check your payment history in the portal to see the status.

I had trouble reaching someone at NYS Department of Labor about payment delays last month. Ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Was way easier than sitting on hold for hours trying to call myself.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to someone about our own benefits.

•I get the frustration but honestly it was worth it for me. The NYS Department of Labor phone system is impossible to get through otherwise.
