NYS Department of Labor approved my claim - how long after being approved for unemployment will i get paid?

Just got the notification that my unemployment claim was finally approved after 2 weeks of adjudication! Super relieved but now I'm wondering about the actual payment timing. How long after being approved for unemployment will i get paid by NYS Department of Labor? I need to know when to expect the money to hit my account because I have rent due next week. I'm on direct deposit if that makes a difference. Also do they pay retroactively for the weeks I was waiting or just going forward?

Congrats on getting approved! For NYS Department of Labor, payment timing depends on a few factors. If you're on direct deposit, you should see your first payment within 2-3 business days after your weekly claim is processed. Yes, they will pay you retroactively for all the weeks you were eligible while waiting for approval, as long as you continued filing your weekly claims during adjudication. Make sure you keep filing every week even after approval.

Thank you! I did keep filing weekly so that's good news about the retroactive pay. Do they send it all as one lump sum or separate payments?

mine took 4 days after approval to get the first payment but i got like 6 weeks worth all at once since i was stuck in adjudication forever

That's exactly what I'm hoping for! Did you get any notification when the payment was sent or did it just show up?

You should see the payment status change in your my.ny.gov account before the money actually hits your bank. Check the payment history section - it will show 'Released' when NYS Department of Labor sends it out. Usually takes 1-2 business days after that to appear in your account with direct deposit. If you're getting paper checks, add another 5-7 days for mail delivery.

I've been waiting 3 weeks since my approval and still no payment!! Called NYS Department of Labor like 50 times and can't get through to anyone. This is ridiculous, how are people supposed to pay bills when the system is this slow?? Anyone know what could be causing delays after approval?

That's definitely not normal. Check if there are any outstanding issues in your account that might be holding up payment. Sometimes there can be identity verification or wage verification issues that don't show up clearly.

I had the same problem and ended up using claimyr.com to actually get through to a real person at NYS Department of Labor. They have this system that calls for you and gets you connected to an agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Turned out I had a small documentation issue that was holding everything up - got it resolved in one call and payment came 2 days later.

Hey Leila! Congrats on getting approved - that's such a relief after waiting through adjudication! In my experience with NYS DOL, once you're approved and have direct deposit set up, you should see your first payment within 3-5 business days. The good news is they definitely pay retroactively for all the weeks you were eligible during the waiting period, as long as you kept filing your weekly certifications (which it sounds like you did). Usually the retroactive amount comes as one larger payment, then you'll get regular weekly payments going forward. Keep an eye on your my.ny.gov account - the payment status will update there first before it hits your bank account. Hope this helps ease some of the stress about rent week!

Thanks Marilyn, that's really helpful! The 3-5 day timeline gives me hope I might get it before rent is due. I'm glad to hear the retroactive pay usually comes as one lump sum - that will definitely help catch up on everything. I've been obsessively checking my.ny.gov account already so I'll keep watching for that status change. This whole process has been so stressful but finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel!
