How long does unemployment take to direct deposit after NYS Department of Labor approval?
Got approved for benefits last Thursday and set up direct deposit through my.ny.gov. My bank account info shows as verified but I still haven't received anything. This is my first time on unemployment so I'm not sure what's normal. How long does it usually take for NYS Department of Labor to actually send the money once everything is approved? Really need to know when I can expect it to hit my account.

Usually takes 2-3 business days after your weekly claim is processed. If you just got approved Thursday, you probably need to file your first weekly claim on Sunday. The direct deposit doesn't happen automatically - you have to certify each week.

•Oh wait, I do need to file weekly claims? I thought once I was approved the money would just come automatically. Where do I do that?

You file weekly claims every Sunday through Wednesday on the NYS Department of Labor website. Log into my.ny.gov and look for the weekly certification option. Once you certify and it's processed, direct deposit typically hits accounts within 2-3 business days. So if you certify Sunday, expect payment Wednesday or Thursday.

•This is exactly right. I've been collecting for 8 weeks now and it's been consistent - certify Sunday, money shows up Wednesday every time.

Just a heads up that your first payment might take a bit longer since it's your initial setup. Mine took almost a week the first time but after that it was regular 2-3 days. Also make sure you answer all the weekly questions correctly or it could delay payment.

•What kind of questions do they ask in the weekly certification? I want to make sure I don't mess anything up.

•Basic stuff like did you work, are you able and available, did you look for work. Just be honest and you'll be fine. The job search requirement is 3 contacts per week right now.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor about payment timing, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Was way easier than trying to call the regular number and getting hung up on constantly.

•Never heard of that but honestly anything is better than spending hours on hold just to get disconnected. How much does it cost?

•They focus more on the value of actually reaching someone rather than the cost. For me it was worth it just to get my questions answered instead of guessing about payment timing.

•You still need to file your weekly claims even after approval. Check my.ny.gov to see if you have any pending certifications to complete.
