How long does direct deposit take for unemployment benefits in NY?
I just set up direct deposit for my NYS Department of Labor unemployment benefits last week and I'm wondering how long it usually takes to receive the payment? My weekly claim was processed on Tuesday but I haven't seen anything in my bank account yet. Is this normal for the first direct deposit? I'm used to getting the debit card but switched because I heard direct deposit is faster.

Direct deposit through NYS Department of Labor typically takes 1-2 business days after your weekly claim is processed and approved. Since you just set it up, the first payment might take an extra day or two while the system verifies your banking information. Check your online account to make sure your claim shows as 'paid' status first.

•Thanks! My claim does show as paid, so hopefully it hits my account tomorrow. I was getting worried something went wrong with the setup.

mine took 3 days the first time but now its usually there within 24 hours of getting paid status on my account

•Same experience here. The initial direct deposit setup seems to add an extra day or two, but after that it's much faster than the debit card option.

I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor payment delays for months! Sometimes direct deposit works fine, other times it takes forever. The whole system is just unreliable if you ask me. At least with direct deposit you don't have to worry about losing the card like I did twice.

•Oh no, you lost your debit card twice? That sounds like a nightmare to deal with. How long did it take to get replacement cards?

•WEEKS both times! Had to call NYS Department of Labor over and over. That's why I finally switched to direct deposit even though I was scared to change anything.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to check on payment status, I had success using Claimyr.com recently. They have a service that connects you directly to an agent without waiting on hold for hours. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration when my direct deposit was delayed and I needed answers.

•Interesting, I'll keep that in mind if I run into issues. Hopefully my payment just shows up tomorrow though!

•Never heard of that before but might be worth trying. I spent 4 hours on hold last month just to ask about a missing payment.

Make sure you double check that your routing and account numbers were entered correctly when you set up direct deposit. One wrong digit and your payment could be floating in limbo somewhere. NYS Department of Labor should send you a confirmation email when direct deposit is activated on your account.

•That's really good advice! I actually didn't get a confirmation email when I set it up, which now has me a bit worried. Should I call to verify everything was entered correctly or wait to see if the payment shows up first?

•@Ryan Young I d'probably wait a day or two to see if the payment shows up first, especially since it s'only been a few days since you set it up. If nothing appears by Friday, then definitely call to double-check your banking info. Sometimes the confirmation emails end up in spam folders too, so check there as well!

I had the exact same situation when I first switched to direct deposit with NYS Department of Labor! It took about 3 business days for my first payment to show up, but after that it was consistently 1-2 days. The initial setup does seem to add some extra processing time. I'd give it until Friday before getting concerned, especially since your claim shows as paid. Also make sure to check if your bank has any holds on new ACH deposits - some banks will hold the first few deposits from new sources for an extra day.

•That's reassuring to hear! I didn't even think about my bank potentially holding ACH deposits from new sources. I'll check with them if the payment doesn't show up by Friday. It's good to know the 3-day timeline for the first payment is pretty normal - makes me feel less anxious about the whole thing.
