How long after unemployment payment is released does it actually hit your account?

My weekly claim was processed yesterday and my NYS Department of Labor account shows payment released but I still don't see anything in my bank account. This is my first time on unemployment so I'm not sure what's normal. How long after the payment shows released does it actually show up? I have direct deposit set up and my bank usually processes things pretty fast. Getting anxious because rent is due soon and I'm counting on this money.

Usually takes 1-2 business days after NYS Department of Labor shows payment released. If it was released yesterday (assuming that was a weekday), you should see it in your account by tomorrow evening at the latest. Banks process ACH transfers at different times but most unemployment direct deposits hit accounts within 48 hours of release.

Thanks! That helps calm my nerves a bit. Do weekends count as business days or should I not expect anything until Monday?

The timing depends on your bank more than NYS Department of Labor. Most major banks (Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo) process unemployment deposits overnight and you'll see them first thing in the morning. Credit unions and smaller banks might take an extra day. If you're not seeing it after 3 business days, then you should call your bank first to make sure there's no issue with your account.

This is exactly right. I learned the hard way that my credit union holds unemployment payments for an extra day compared to when I had Chase. OP, if you need to reach NYS Department of Labor about payment issues, I had luck using claimyr.com - they help you get through to an actual agent instead of sitting on hold forever. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works.

I've been getting unemployment for 4 months now and it's ALWAYS different timing! Sometimes 1 day, sometimes 3 days. The system is so inconsistent it drives me crazy. Last week my payment was released on Wednesday and I didn't get it until Saturday morning. NYS Department of Labor really needs to get their act together with these payment processing delays.

Yeah I feel you on the inconsistency

Wait are we talking about the same thing? I thought payment released meant it was already in your account? I'm so confused by all this unemployment terminology. My claim status says pending but I filed my weekly claim on Sunday like always.

No, 'payment released' means NYS Department of Labor has approved and sent the payment to your bank, but your bank still needs to process it. 'Pending' means your weekly claim is still being reviewed and hasn't been approved for payment yet.

Don't panic! I've been on unemployment for about 6 months now and the timing can definitely vary. If your payment was released yesterday and you have direct deposit set up, you should see it by tomorrow or Friday at the latest. Banks typically process unemployment deposits in the early morning hours, so check your account first thing when you wake up. Since you mentioned rent is due soon, you might also want to reach out to your landlord to let them know there could be a day or two delay - most are understanding about unemployment timing issues. Keep an eye on your bank account and if you don't see anything by Friday evening, then I'd start making calls to your bank.

This is really helpful advice! I'm also new to unemployment and the waiting is nerve-wracking. Good point about contacting the landlord - I never thought about giving them a heads up about potential timing delays. Question though - if the payment doesn't show up by Friday, is it better to call the bank first or NYS Department of Labor? Want to make sure I'm calling the right place if there's an issue.
