How long does it take for unemployment to pay after certifying my weekly claim in NY?
I just certified my weekly claim on the NYS Department of Labor website yesterday and I'm wondering how long it usually takes for the payment to show up. This is my second week claiming and my first payment took about 3 days to hit my debit card. Is that normal or should I expect it sooner this time? I'm trying to plan my budget and need to know when I can count on the money being available.

For regular UI payments in NY, it typically takes 2-3 business days after you certify your weekly claim for the payment to appear on your unemployment debit card. If you have direct deposit set up, it might be slightly faster. The timing is pretty consistent once your claim is established and not under any kind of review.

•Thanks! That matches what I experienced last week. Good to know it should be consistent going forward.

Just keep in mind that if there are any issues with your certification or if NYS Department of Labor needs to verify something, it can take longer. I had one week where they held my payment for almost 10 days because I reported some work hours and they needed to review it. But normally it's very predictable timing.

•Wait, they can hold payments for reporting work hours? I've been doing some freelance work and reporting it honestly. Should I be worried about delays?

•No don't worry! You're doing the right thing by reporting it. They just sometimes need to verify the amounts match what employers report. It's better to be honest than risk an overpayment issue later.

The NYS Department of Labor payment system is actually pretty reliable compared to other states. I've been collecting for 8 weeks now and only had one delay when there was a system maintenance issue. If you're not getting paid within 4-5 business days, that's when I'd start calling to check on it.

If you're having trouble reaching someone at NYS Department of Labor about payment delays, I had success using Claimyr.com recently. They helped me get through to an actual agent when I couldn't get past the busy signals. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really saved me time when I had a payment stuck in processing.

•Interesting, I'll keep that in mind if I run into issues. Hopefully the regular timeline holds up for me though.

also make sure you check your debit card balance online not just wait for a text notification, sometimes those are delayed

One thing that helped me track my payments better was setting up text alerts through the KeyBank debit card system (if you're using the standard NY unemployment card). You get notified immediately when funds are deposited, which takes the guesswork out of checking your balance constantly. Also, payments typically don't process on weekends or holidays, so if you certify late in the week, you might be waiting until the following Tuesday or Wednesday for the deposit.

•That's really helpful advice about the KeyBank alerts! I didn't even know that was an option. I've been manually checking the balance every day which is pretty tedious. Do you know if there's a fee for setting up those text notifications, or is it free with the unemployment debit card?
