NYS Department of Labor - how long after I apply for unemployment will I get it?
I submitted my unemployment application through the NYS Department of Labor website on Monday morning and I'm wondering what the typical timeline is for getting my first payment. My previous job ended last Friday due to company layoffs so I filed as soon as I could. I have direct deposit set up and completed the identity verification already. Just trying to plan my budget - does anyone know how long the approval process usually takes? I heard it can vary a lot depending on your situation.

The standard timeline for NYS Department of Labor is typically 2-3 weeks for your first payment if everything goes smoothly. Since you filed right after your job ended and have direct deposit, you're in a good position. You'll need to file your first weekly claim this Sunday or Monday, and if approved, payment usually comes 2-3 business days after your weekly claim is processed. Make sure you keep filing weekly even while waiting for approval.

•Thanks! So I should file my weekly claim even though I haven't heard back about my initial application yet?

It really depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication or not. Mine was approved in about 10 days because it was straightforward - laid off, no issues with my work history. But my friend's took 6 weeks because they had to verify some employment details. The NYS Department of Labor has to review your wage history and make sure everything matches up with what employers reported.

•What causes a claim to go into adjudication? I'm worried mine might get delayed.

•Three weeks usually means there's an adjudication issue that needs to be resolved. Have you checked your online account for any documents you need to submit or correspondence from NYS Department of Labor?

If you're having trouble reaching someone at NYS Department of Labor about delays, I had good luck using a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was able to find out why my claim was stuck in review and what documents I needed to submit.

•Is that service legit? I've been trying to call for days and just get busy signals.

•Yeah it worked for me when I couldn't get through the normal way. They basically handle the calling and waiting part so you don't have to sit on hold for hours.

The whole system is a joke. I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for 2 months now and they keep asking for more documentation. First it was wage verification, then they wanted proof of job search activities, now they want some form I never heard of. Meanwhile bills keep coming and they act like it's no big deal to make people wait.

•I feel you on this. The bureaucracy is insane.

Just remember you have to keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial decision. I made that mistake early on and it delayed everything even more. Also make sure you're doing your job search activities because they can ask for proof later.
