NYS Department of Labor unemployment benefit - how many days to get approved and receive payment?
I submitted my unemployment application through the NYS Department of Labor website last Monday and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to get approved and actually receive the first payment. My previous job ended two weeks ago due to company downsizing and I really need to know when I can expect something. The my.ny.gov portal just shows my claim is 'under review' but doesn't give any timeline. Has anyone recently gone through this process? How many days did it take from filing to getting your first unemployment benefit payment?

It depends on whether your claim needs adjudication or not. If everything is straightforward with no issues, you could see approval within 7-10 business days. But if there are any flags like job separation issues or wage verification problems, it can take 3-4 weeks for adjudication to complete. The first payment usually comes 2-3 days after approval if you're using direct deposit.

•Thanks for the info. I was laid off so hopefully no issues there. I did set up direct deposit when I filed so that should help speed things up.

The NYS Department of Labor has been pretty efficient lately compared to a few years ago. Just make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval - you can't get paid for weeks you don't certify. Also check that all your employer information and wages are correct in the system because any discrepancies will trigger adjudication delays.

•Wait, you have to file weekly claims before getting approved? I thought you only started those after approval. Now I'm worried I missed something!

•Yes, you need to file weekly claims starting the week after you file your initial application. Log into my.ny.gov and look for the weekly claim section. You can backdate if you missed any weeks but it's better to stay current.

I had a nightmare experience trying to get through to someone at NYS Department of Labor when my claim was stuck for over 3 weeks. Kept getting busy signals or hung up on after waiting forever. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually got me connected to an agent the same day. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Turned out there was a simple verification issue holding up my claim that got resolved in 10 minutes once I talked to someone.

•That sounds too good to be true. How much did it cost?

•They focus on getting you connected rather than the cost aspect. For me it was worth it because I was about to lose my apartment without the unemployment money. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get things moving.

The whole system is so frustrating!!! I've been waiting 18 days and still nothing. Meanwhile bills are piling up and they act like we're asking for charity instead of benefits we earned. The NYS Department of Labor needs to do better with their processing times.

I just went through this process last month and it took 9 business days from filing to getting my first payment. The key things that helped speed it up were: 1) Making sure all my employer info was accurate when I filed, 2) Responding immediately to any requests for additional documentation, and 3) filing my weekly claims right away even while waiting for approval. The "under review" status is normal - mine stayed that way until the day it suddenly switched to approved. Keep checking the portal daily and don't panic if it seems slow, the system is actually working better than it used to. Good luck!
