How long for first NY unemployment payment after certifying for 2 weeks?

I finally got approved for NY unemployment and have been certifying for the past two weeks (submitted on time both Sundays). My account status shows 'processed' but I haven't received any money in my bank account yet. I chose direct deposit during application. Is this normal? How long does it typically take to receive the first payment? I'm getting a bit anxious since my bills are piling up and I really need this money soon.

The first payment typically takes 3-4 business days after your initial certification, but ONLY after the DOL has fully processed your claim. So the real question is: did you get a monetary determination letter yet? If you just got approved recently, there might still be a waiting week before payments begin.

Yes, I did get the monetary determination letter about 10 days ago. It showed my weekly benefit amount and everything. So I've already waited the waiting week? I thought the certifications I did were for actual payment weeks.

it took me almost 3 weeks to get my first payment after i started certifying!! system is SO SLOW in 2025, dont worry yet

3 weeks?! That's way longer than I was expecting. Did you have to do anything special to make the payments start?

There's a common misunderstanding about the waiting week. The first week you're eligible is a waiting week (no payment), then you certify for the following weeks and get paid for those. So if you've certified for two weeks after your waiting week, you should expect payment for both. Some things to check: 1. Verify your direct deposit info is correct in your account 2. Make sure there are no pending issues on your claim 3. Check if your payment status says "pending" or "processed" If it says processed but you haven't received payment within 5 business days, there might be an issue with your bank information or an unresolved eligibility question.

Thank you for explaining! I double-checked my direct deposit info and it's correct. The status says "processed" for both weeks. Is there any way to see if there are pending issues? I don't see anything obvious in my account that indicates a problem.

You should see any pending issues in your account dashboard under "Claim Status" or when you log in through your NY.gov ID. If nothing shows up there, it might be worth calling to check if there's an invisible hold. Unfortunately, getting through to an agent can be extremely difficult.

Are you sure you entered the correct bank info? I accidentally transposed 2 numbers in my account # and my payment got returned. Took an extra week to sort out. Just something to double check!

That's a good point - I just triple checked my banking info and it's definitely correct. The last 4 digits match my actual account.

I've been through this before. What's happening is that your first payment goes through extra verification. It's annoying but actually pretty normal for it to take 7-10 business days for the very first payment, then after that they come within 2-3 days of certifying. The system is built to be slow at first as a fraud prevention measure (at least that's what a rep told me).

When I had this issue in January, I was going CRAZY trying to call the regular unemployment number. Busy signals for days! I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Turns out I had an identity verification flag that wasn't showing up in my online account. The agent removed it on the spot and my payment hit my account the next day. Sometimes you need to actually speak to someone to get these things fixed.

Thank you for suggesting this. I've been trying to call for the past few days with no luck. I'll check out that service if my payment doesn't arrive by the end of this week.

Yep I've used that before too when I had an issue with my claim. Way better than spending all day redialing!

does anyone know if they process payments on weekends???

They don't process payments on weekends or holidays. Only business days. And even then, once they process it, your bank might hold it for 1-2 days depending on their policies.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that my payment finally came through this morning! It took exactly 8 business days from my first certification. Both weeks were deposited together. Thanks for all the help and reassurance!

thats such a relief to hear!! hopefully mine comes through soon too. did you ever find out why it took so long??

No explanation really - I think it's just their standard timeline for first payments. The good news is that both payments came together, and they included the full amount I was expecting!

For anyone else reading this thread in the future: The typical timeline for NY unemployment in 2025 is: 1. Claim approval/monetary determination: 2-3 weeks after application 2. First week = waiting week (no payment) 3. First actual payment: 7-10 business days after certifying 4. Subsequent payments: 2-3 business days after weekly certification They've improved the system somewhat, but that first payment still takes longer than they advertise.

Just wanted to add my experience from last month - I was in the exact same situation and it drove me crazy waiting! My first payment took 9 business days after certifying, but like others mentioned, they deposited both weeks together. The key thing that helped my anxiety was checking my online account daily - once it switches from "pending" to "processed" you know the money is coming, it's just a matter of the banking system catching up. Also, if you have a credit union they sometimes process ACH deposits faster than big banks. Hang in there everyone, the wait is brutal but the payments do come through!

Thanks for this helpful timeline breakdown! I'm currently on day 6 of waiting for my first payment and this gives me hope that it should come through soon. It's reassuring to know that 7-10 business days is actually normal for the first payment - the DOL website makes it sound like it should only take 2-3 days which had me worried something was wrong. Question for anyone who's been through this: do they send any kind of notification when the payment is actually sent to your bank, or does the money just show up?

From my experience, they don't send any notification when the payment is actually sent to your bank - the money just shows up! The only way to track it is through your online account where you can see the status change from "pending" to "processed." Once it says processed, that means they've sent it to your bank, but like others mentioned, your bank might still take 1-2 days to make it available in your account. I found it helpful to check my bank account first thing in the morning since ACH deposits usually post overnight. You're on day 6 so you should definitely see something soon!

I'm going through this exact same situation right now! Filed my claim in early March, got approved last week, and just completed my second certification yesterday. My status shows "processed" but still no payment in my account. Reading through everyone's experiences here is actually really reassuring - sounds like 7-10 business days for that first payment is totally normal, even though it's stressful when you're waiting for it. I'm on day 4 now so hopefully it comes through soon. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines, it really helps to know what to expect!

You're definitely not alone in this! I'm actually in a very similar situation - got approved recently and am waiting on my first payment too. It's such a relief to see everyone's experiences here showing that 7-10 business days is actually the norm for that first payment, even though the DOL website makes it sound much faster. The waiting is definitely nerve-wracking when you have bills to pay! From what I've read in this thread, it seems like once that first payment comes through, the subsequent ones are much faster (2-3 days). Fingers crossed both of ours come through soon!

I went through this exact same anxiety last year! My first payment took 8 business days and I was checking my bank account obsessively every morning. What really helped was understanding that NY's system has multiple layers of verification for first payments - they verify your identity, bank info, and eligibility one more time before releasing funds. It's frustrating but it's actually a good sign that your status shows "processed" because that means you've cleared all the hurdles. The money is coming! Also, pro tip: if you have mobile banking, set up account alerts for deposits so you don't have to keep manually checking. The relief when that first payment hits is incredible!

That's such great advice about setting up mobile banking alerts! I never thought of that but it would definitely save me from obsessively checking my account every few hours. It's also really helpful to understand that there are multiple verification layers for the first payment - that explains why it takes so much longer than the website suggests. I'm on day 5 now and your comment gives me hope that it should come through in the next few days. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm currently going through this exact same waiting game right now! Just certified for my second week yesterday and my status shows "processed" but still no money in my account. Reading through everyone's experiences here is honestly such a huge relief - I was starting to panic that something was wrong with my claim, but it sounds like 7-10 business days for the first payment is completely normal even though the DOL website makes it seem like it should be much faster. I'm on day 3 of waiting so hopefully it comes through soon. It's so stressful when you have rent and bills due! Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and experiences - this thread is like a lifeline for those of us going through this anxiety-inducing wait.

I completely understand that anxiety! I'm actually in a very similar boat - just finished my second week of certifying and have been obsessively checking my bank account multiple times a day. This thread has been such a godsend for my peace of mind too. It's crazy how the DOL website gives the impression that payments come in 2-3 days when the reality seems to be much longer for that crucial first payment. I'm on day 6 of waiting now, so reading everyone's experiences showing 7-10 business days as normal is keeping me sane. The financial stress is real when you're counting on this money for basic expenses! Hopefully both of our payments come through very soon. Thanks for adding your voice to this thread - it really does help to know we're not alone in this nerve-wracking waiting period.

I'm in the exact same situation right now and this thread has been a lifesaver for my anxiety! Just completed my second week of certifying yesterday and my status shows "processed" but no payment yet. I was starting to freak out thinking something was wrong with my claim, but reading everyone's experiences showing 7-10 business days for the first payment is actually normal has given me so much relief. I'm currently on day 4 of waiting. The DOL website really does make it sound like payments should come within 2-3 days which is super misleading! It's especially stressful when you're already financially stretched and counting on this money. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines - knowing that both weeks usually get deposited together when the first payment finally comes through is reassuring too. Fingers crossed mine comes through soon!

I'm literally going through this exact same thing right now too! Just certified for my second week on Sunday and I'm on day 2 of waiting - the anticipation is killing me. It's so reassuring to see everyone's experiences confirming that 7-10 business days is actually normal for the first payment, even though like you said, the DOL website totally makes it sound like it should be way faster. I was getting really worried that something was wrong with my claim when the money didn't show up after a few days. The financial stress is so real when you're already struggling and this is supposed to be your lifeline. Reading everyone's stories about getting both weeks deposited together when it finally comes through gives me hope. Hopefully we'll both see our payments hit our accounts soon! This waiting game is brutal but at least we know we're not alone in it.

I just wanted to jump in here as someone who went through this exact same nerve-wracking experience about 6 months ago! The waiting for that first payment is absolutely brutal, especially when you're already financially stressed. I remember checking my bank account like 10 times a day and panicking that something was wrong with my claim. My first payment took exactly 9 business days after certifying, and like others mentioned, both weeks came through at once. What really helped me was understanding that NY's system treats the first payment differently - they run additional fraud prevention checks and verifications that don't happen with subsequent payments. Once that first one hits though, every payment after comes like clockwork in 2-3 days. For anyone currently waiting - hang in there! The "processed" status really does mean your money is coming, it's just their backend systems being extra cautious. I know it doesn't help with immediate bills, but the payments do come through and they'll backpay everything you're owed.

This is exactly what I needed to hear right now! I'm currently on day 5 of waiting for my first payment and have been doing the exact same thing - checking my bank account constantly throughout the day and starting to panic that something went wrong. It's so helpful to know that the extra fraud prevention checks are actually normal and not a sign that there's an issue with my claim. The fact that your first payment took 9 days but then all subsequent ones came quickly gives me a lot of hope. I keep telling myself that "processed" status has to mean something good, but when you're stressed about money it's hard not to overthink every little thing. Thanks for sharing your experience and the reassurance - it really helps to know that this waiting period is just part of how their system works and not something to worry about!

I'm currently in this exact situation too and finding this thread has been such a relief! Just finished my second week of certifying on Sunday and I'm on day 3 of waiting with a "processed" status but no payment yet. I was starting to get really anxious because like everyone else mentioned, the DOL website makes it sound like payments should arrive in 2-3 days max. Reading all these experiences showing 7-10 business days is actually normal for the first payment has really calmed my nerves. It's especially tough when you're already financially tight and this money is what you're counting on to keep things afloat. The waiting game is brutal but I'm feeling more confident now that the payment will come through soon. Thanks to everyone for sharing their timelines - this community support makes such a difference when you're going through this stressful process!
