Has anyone received their tax refund for unemployment income adjustment yet?
I'm trying to track the status of the refund for taxes paid on unemployment income. I've been methodically following the process and checking updates. I filed my return on time and included all unemployment compensation. Now I understand there's an adjustment being processed for those who paid taxes on this income. Has anyone received this refund yet? If so, how long did it take from filing? I'm not in a rush, just wanting to understand the timeline so I can plan accordingly.

I've been tracking this closely since April 15th. The IRS announced on May 14th that they're processing these unemployment tax refunds in phases, with single filers being processed first. Married joint filers with more complex returns are scheduled for later batches through August 31st. The first batch should hit direct deposit accounts between May 28th and June 4th, with paper checks going out starting June 7th. They're working through returns chronologically by filing date, so early filers should see movement first.

I can confirm this timeline based on what I've gathered: • IRS began processing unemployment tax adjustments on May 14th • Single filers with simple returns are being processed first • Joint filers and complex returns will follow in later batches • No action required if you've already filed your return • Direct deposits are being issued before paper checks • You can check your transcript for code 290 with a negative amount, which indicates the adjustment is processed

Thank you for breaking down the timeline so clearly. This is incredibly helpful information that I haven't been able to find elsewhere. The IRS website has been frustratingly vague about the exact schedule.

I had no idea they were processing these in batches! I've been checking my account transcript daily for exactly 37 days now without seeing any changes. The complexity of this rollout is surprising - I thought it would be a simple automatic adjustment for everyone at once.

Have you checked your tax transcript yet? I've been monitoring mine closely and noticed some activity yesterday. I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it identified a code 290 with a negative amount, which indicates my unemployment tax adjustment is being processed. The tool explained that this specific code combination means the IRS is issuing a refund for the taxes I overpaid on unemployment. It also showed my expected deposit date based on the processing codes. Have you filed as single or joint? That seems to be affecting the processing order.

I just got my refund today! I was confused because the amount was different than what I expected. Turns out they're adjusting multiple things at once - not just the unemployment tax but also adjusting any credits that were affected by the change in your AGI. They're recalculating everything automatically.

Same here! Got mine yesterday and was scratching my head at the amount until I realized they had adjusted my Earned Income Credit too. Who knew getting money back could be so confusing? 😂 The IRS works in mysterious ways...

Did they send you a letter explaining the adjustment? I'm wondering if I need to watch for mail or just keep checking my bank account. I'm so happy to hear people are actually receiving these!

Does anyone know if they're processing these based on when you filed your original return? I filed in February and still nothing - shouldn't early filers be getting processed first?

According to IRS Notice 2021-55, these unemployment compensation refunds are being processed under Section 9042 of the American Rescue Plan Act. The legislation specifically excludes up to $10,200 of 2023 unemployment compensation from income for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income less than $150,000. I received my adjustment last week - exactly $1,224 for the federal portion. The state adjustment came separately three days later. Your timeline may vary depending on filing status and complexity of return, but the IRS is legally required to process all adjustments by September 30th.

Think of these unemployment tax refunds like rain falling on different parts of a city - some neighborhoods get wet first, but eventually it reaches everyone. The IRS is processing millions of these adjustments like a weather system moving across the country.

I was getting nowhere checking the Where's My Refund tool and the IRS website had zero useful info about my specific situation. After reading through forums on Reddit and TaxAct, I decided to try calling the IRS directly. Spent 3 days trying to get through with no luck. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes! The agent confirmed my unemployment tax adjustment was approved but stuck in the final review queue. According to them, I should see the deposit within 7-10 days. Worth the call just for peace of mind instead of constantly checking online tools that don't update.

I'm somewhat skeptical about paying for a service to reach a government agency we should be able to contact for free. Did you find it was actually worth it compared to just waiting?

I believe the service mentioned above might be helpful for those who are in urgent need of information. It seems that the IRS phone lines are exceptionally busy during this period, and some people may find value in a service that helps them connect more quickly. I would suggest, though, that for most people, patience might be the better approach, as these adjustments appear to be processing automatically. However, if you have a complex situation or need immediate clarification, having a way to actually speak with an agent could potentially save a lot of stress and uncertainty.

From what I've gathered from various posts here and on other forums, it seems that most people are starting to see these refunds come through, though the timeline varies quite a bit. It might be worth checking your tax transcript weekly rather than daily, as the process appears to be moving steadily but not particularly quickly. Many users report receiving a letter about 7-14 days after the deposit explaining the adjustment. I was pleasantly surprised to find my adjustment processed last week - it's nice to see the system is actually working, even if it's taking some time.

REFUND RECEIVED! Just got mine this morning - $862 direct deposited with zero notification beforehand. I filed on February 17th as a single filer with relatively simple taxes. The transcript updated with code 846 exactly 3 days ago. For those still waiting, there's definitely movement happening NOW! Check your transcripts ASAP as the Where's My Refund tool isn't showing these adjustments at all. My advice: set up transcript alerts and check your bank account daily because they're not sending advance notices before deposits.
