How to check on last year's ny unemployment tax refund amount?

I filed for unemployment in 2022 and paid taxes on those benefits. I heard that NY is giving refunds on taxes paid for unemployment benefits last year. Does anyone know how to check if I'm getting one of these refunds and how much I might be getting back? I've tried calling the general unemployment number but kept getting stuck in their automated system. Is there a special department or specific number I should call about the tax refund specifically? I'm trying to figure out my budget for next month and this refund would really help me out right now.

I was in the exact same boat! Called the main number like 20 times and got nowhere. Finally I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual human being. Best money I ever spent to skip those ridiculous wait times! The agent I talked to told me I needed to contact the tax department directly, not unemployment, since it's a tax refund issue. They transferred me right over and I found out my refund was coming next week. Talking to an actual person made all the difference.

Nah it's real. I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after spending hours on hold. They just connect you with an agent when they get through. Check out this video if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

No catch that I found. They just call for you and connect you when someone answers. The unemployment system is so broken I would have paid double just to avoid the headache lol

To directly answer ur question - you gotta contact the NY tax department, not unemployment. The refund is being processed by them, not NYSDOL. Try 518-457-5181. Good luck getting thru tho, took me 3 days of calling.

Thanks for the number! Did you find out how much youre getting back when you spoke to them?

Yep they told me exactly how much and when it woud be deposited. In my case it was like $430 which was nice surprise. They can see everything in there system.

I got my refund already, it just showed up in my account last week! But the weird thing is I never got any notification about it. Just a random deposit from NYS Dept of Taxation. If you filed with TurboTax, you can log in and check under tax documents to see if you qualify for the refund. That's how I figured out what the deposit was for.

This whole unemployment tax refund thing is such a mess. I called FIVE different numbers and got FIVE different answers. One person told me I wasn't eligible, another said my refund was processed back in April (it wasn't), and another couldn't find my info at all! The system is completely broken. Best advice I can give is document EVERYTHING - names, call times, reference numbers. The left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing with these refunds.

Thats the truth. I swear they just making it up as they go along 🤡

The worst part is they act like YOU'RE the one who doesn't understand. I worked in tax accounting before I got laid off and even I can't figure out their system!

For anyone still looking for answers on this, here's what I've learned after dealing with this exact situation for the past month: First, the refund is automatic if you qualify - you don't need to file any additional forms or requests. However, checking on the status is tricky. Your best bet is contacting the NY Department of Taxation and Finance directly. The unemployment office can't help with tax refunds. If you can't get through on the phone (which is EXTREMELY likely), try their online message center through your NY.gov account. I got a response within 3 days. If all else fails, do what I did and use Claimyr.com to connect with a live agent. They bypassed the hold time and got me to a real person who transferred me to the tax department. I found out my refund was being processed and would arrive in 2 weeks. The amount varies based on your specific tax situation, but generally, it's the state tax you paid on your unemployment benefits from 2022. Hope this helps someone!

Thank you SO much. I'll try the message center first and see if that works. Really appreciate the detailed breakdown!

Maybe check your bank account first? My refund just showed up without any notification. I was confused until I saw the deposit name.

I feel like im the only person who hasnt gotten this mysterious refund yet. Everyone I know already got theirs but I'm still waiting. When I talked to someone they said they're still processing claims from last year. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE ITS BEEN A YEAR

not to be that person, but has anyone else noticed that theyre TERRIBLE about sending the proper tax forms? last year my 1099-G was wrong and I had to fight for months to get it corrected. Now theyre doing refunds and I guarantee there will be more errors. Check your numbers carefully people!

I saw something about this on the news yesterday. Apparently there's still like 400,000 people waiting for these refunds and they're processing them in batches alphabetically. So if your last name is toward the end of the alphabet you're probably still waiting. They're saying everyone should be paid by end of August.

It was on channel 7 news. But I just asked my wife (last name T) and she got hers last week, so maybe they're not sticking to the alphabet thing exactly

Try checking the "Where's my refund" tool on the NY tax website. Although honestly in my experience it doesn't always work right for these special refunds.

I tried calling about this last month and spent 4 HOURS on hold only to have the call drop when they finally transferred me. I was ready to throw my phone out the window 😤 Then I learned about Claimyr from my neighbor who used it to fix his unemployment issue. That service is AMAZING! They called and got me connected to a real person in like 45 minutes. The agent told me my refund was approved for $780 and would come next week. Best decision ever using them. claimyr.com if anyone else is pulling their hair out trying to get answers.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

The difference is they don't claim to do anything except get past the hold times. They literally just call and wait on hold FOR you, then connect you to the agent when they answer. You still handle your own questions with the actual agent.

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this Claimyr thing? I see a few people mentioning it but im suspicious of anything that sounds too good to be true

I was skeptical too but I literally just used it yesterday after seeing someone mention it here. It works exactly as advertised. They call, wait on hold, then call you when they get someone. Saved me hours of frustration.

I used it last month to fix a payment issue. The service itself works fine - they just wait on hold for you, nothing magical. But at least I didn't have to listen to that awful hold music for 3 hours.
