Still waiting for NY unemployment tax refund after 9 months - no response from NYSDOL
I filed for my NY unemployment tax refund back in March 2025 and still haven't received anything! In August I got a letter saying I needed to wait another 60 days, and those 60 days passed over a month ago. I've been trying to call them constantly but can't get through to anyone. Has anyone else been waiting this long? This is ridiculous - I really need this money for bills and rent. What's the secret to actually reaching a human being at NYSDOL? I'm getting desperate at this point.

•Have you been able to get through to anyone on the phone? I've tried calling at different times but always get disconnected.

Tax refunds for unemployment benefits are actually processed through the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, not NYSDOL. You should be contacting them instead at 518-457-5181. Make sure you have your tax return information ready when you call. The standard processing time is usually 6-8 weeks, but they're experiencing significant backlogs this year due to system upgrades. Call early in the morning (right when they open at 8:30am) for the best chance of getting through.

•Thank you!! I had no idea it was a different department handling this. No wonder I wasn't getting anywhere with NYSDOL. I'll try calling that number tomorrow morning.

•I tried that number last week and was on hold for 1hr 45min before getting disconnected. The system is completely broken this year!

I was in the exact same situation last month! Waited 7 months for my refund and couldn't get through to anyone. I tried emailing, calling daily, even went to the office in person and was told I needed an appointment. I finally got through to someone who could help by using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a service that gets you connected to an agent usually within an hour instead of spending days trying to call yourself. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Once I actually talked to someone, they found that there was a flag on my account because they needed additional verification. The agent was able to remove the hold and I got my refund deposited 2 weeks later. Definitely worth it after months of frustration.

•I've never heard of this service before. Does it really work? I'm willing to try anything at this point. Did they explain why it took so long for your refund?

•Yes, it worked for me! The agent I spoke with said my account had a verification flag that nobody told me about. Apparently they sent a letter to my old address (even though I updated it online). Once the agent cleared it up, my refund was processed pretty quickly. The whole thing could have been resolved months earlier if I could have just spoken to someone.

Here are some important things to know about unemployment tax refunds in NY for 2025: 1. The standard processing time is 6-8 weeks in normal circumstances, but the Department of Taxation is experiencing significant delays this year. 2. If you received that 60-day letter, it usually means they're reviewing your return manually or need additional verification. 3. You can check your refund status online at tax.ny.gov/pit/file/refund.htm - this is faster than calling in most cases. 4. If the online status says "in process" for more than 90 days, that's when you definitely need to speak with a representative. 5. Make sure you're calling the Tax Department (518-457-5181), not NYSDOL, as they're separate agencies. Hope this helps!

•Thanks for all this info! The online status has been saying "in process" since April, which is why I'm getting so frustrated. I'll definitely be calling the Tax Department tomorrow morning.

THEY ARE DOING THIS ON PURPOSE!!!! I had to wait 11 MONTHS for my refund last year and no one would tell me why. They hold onto OUR MONEY as long as possible because they get to use it meanwhile WE suffer. The whole system is BROKEN by design!!! And don't get me started on those phone lines - they hang up on you on purpose so they don't have to help. I finally had to contact my state assembly person to get my money!!!

•Actually, contacting your state representative is great advice. Their offices have dedicated liaisons with state agencies and can often resolve issues much faster than individuals can on their own. I work for a non-profit that helps people with unemployment issues, and we frequently advise clients to contact their representatives when facing extended delays.

•No, I haven't received any other letters asking for more information. Just that one letter in August saying to wait 60 more days. That's part of why this is so frustrating - I have no idea if they need something else from me or if it's just sitting in a pile somewhere.

Just wanted to add - if you do manage to speak with a representative, ask them specifically if there are any "codes" or "flags" on your return. Sometimes they won't volunteer this information unless you directly ask. Common flags that cause delays include: - Missing documents or signatures - Address mismatches between different forms - Income verification issues - Identity verification requirements - Tax credit eligibility reviews The representative can tell you exactly what's causing the delay and what you need to do to resolve it. Make sure to get their ID number and name for follow-up if needed.

•This is super helpful - thank you! I'll definitely ask about flags on my account when I call. I have a feeling there might be some issue they haven't told me about.

Have you tried checking your refund status online? The NY Tax Department has a "Where's My Refund" tool on their website where you can check the status without calling. Also, double-check that your banking information is correct in your tax filing - sometimes refunds get returned if there's an issue with the direct deposit information.

•Yes, I've been checking that website almost daily for months. It just says "Your refund is being processed" with no additional information. I filed for direct deposit, but at this point I'd be happy to receive a paper check if it means actually getting my money!

Just wanted to update - I called the Tax Department this morning using the number someone shared above. After 45 minutes on hold, I gave up and decided to try Claimyr. I got connected to a Tax Department representative within 30 minutes! Turns out there was an issue with my address verification (I moved in January) that was holding everything up. The representative removed the hold and said I should receive my refund within 2-3 weeks. So relieved to finally have an answer!

•That's awesome news! I'm going to try this approach tomorrow. I also moved recently so maybe I'm having the same issue. Thanks for sharing your success!
