Struggling to reach anyone at NY unemployment about promised backpay

My backpay situation is driving me crazy. The NY unemployment office told me about 3 weeks ago that they were going to release my backpay for the period when I was unemployed from September to December last year. They said it would take 7-10 business days to process, but I haven't seen a penny hit my account yet. I've been calling every single day for the past two weeks trying to follow up but can't get through to anyone. The automated system just keeps me on hold forever then disconnects after like 45 minutes. I've emailed them 4 times with no response. I'm owed almost $6,900 and I desperately need this money for rent and bills. Has anyone had success getting through to a real person lately? Any tricks or tips? I'm at my wits end here.

same here, the NY unemployment phone system is a total joke. been calling for a month about my missing payments. either busy signal or put on hold for hours then disconnected. their 'improved' system is actually worse than before 🤡

Exactly! How can they just tell us they'll pay us then ghost us? How are we supposed to pay bills???

0 coins

the whole system is designed to frustrate people into giving up. stay persistent!

I think they hope we'll just forget about the money they owe us. not happening!!!

After spinning my wheels for 3 weeks trying to reach someone about my missing payments, I finally found a solution! Used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that somehow got me connected to an actual human at unemployment. They basically call for you, wait on hold, then connect you when a rep answers. Best money I've spent - talking to an agent got my backpay released within 48 hours! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

is this for real? sounds too good to be true after all the nightmare stories i hear

100% worked for me. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after 3 weeks of trying. The agent I talked to fixed my issue in 15 minutes.

another company trying to profit off broken government systems 🙄 why should we have to PAY to get our benefits?

0 coins

I get that frustration but I literally tried EVERYTHING else first. Spent hours on hold, sent emails, tried calling at different hours. This was the only thing that worked.

0 coins

just checked out their site, seems like they just autodial until they get through? might give it a try, im desperate at this point

0 coins

Yeah that's pretty much it. They keep calling until someone picks up, then they transfer the call to you. Saved me from losing my mind on hold music lol

Try calling RIGHT when they open at 8am. I've had success getting through that way. Or right before they close. The midday hours are impossible.

0 coins

I've tried this! I set my alarm for 7:55am three days in a row. Still couldn't get through 😭

0 coins

Dang that sucks. It worked for me but maybe they changed something. The system is such garbage

I've noticed a weird pattern - their phone system seems to be less busy on Wednesdays for some reason. Maybe try focusing your calls then? Also try the alternate number: 888-209-8124 instead of the main one. Sometimes it has a different queue.

You should file a complaint with your state representative! That's what finally worked for me after 2 months of getting nowhere with NY unemployment. Find your rep online, call their office, explain the situation. They have special channels to escalate these issues. My backpay appeared 5 days after my rep's office got involved.

this is actually good advice. i did this too and suddenly unemployment was calling ME.

Thanks for this tip, I hadn't thought of that. Will definitely try it.

The most comprehensive guide for dealing with NY unemployment backpay issues (I've been through this nightmare twice): 1. Document EVERYTHING. Every call attempt, email, promise made - write it all down with dates. 2. Try these phone tricks: Call exactly at 8:00am, press options in this order: 1, then 9, then 2, then 1 again. This sometimes bypasses the main queue. 3. Email them at both dol.sm.unemploymentassistance@labor.ny.gov AND nysdol@labor.ny.gov with your claim ID in the subject line. 4. Contact your state assembly person AND state senator - both of them. Their offices can escalate. 5. If all else fails, use claimyr.com - it's a service that gets you through to an agent. Worked when nothing else did for me. 6. When you finally get through, be super polite but firm. Ask for a specific date when your backpay will arrive. Ask for a direct number to call back if it doesn't arrive. 7. If the agent says they've "released" your funds, ask them to check if there are any holds or pending issues that could delay payment. Stay persistent! The system is designed to wear you down, but your money is YOUR MONEY.

this should be pinned to the top of this sub! great info 👏

the key part is contacting your state reps - they have special hotlines to DOL

Thank you SO much for taking the time to write all this out. Gonna try the phone sequence trick tomorrow morning.

number 5 really works. claimyr is how i finally got through last month. saved my sanity.

0 coins

Have you tried reaching out on Twitter? Seriously. Sometimes tweeting @NYSLabor with your issue (don't include personal info!) can get attention. They have social media teams that monitor mentions.

0 coins

Never thought about using social media! Worth a shot I guess, nothing else is working

the whole backpay system is messed up rn. they told me id get my money in February and i just got it YESTERDAY...four months later! and only after i got connected through claimyr.com and spoke to a supervisor who "released" it manually. the agent said theres a huge backlog with backpay specifically.

0 coins

can confirm, my cousin works for DOL (not in NY) and says backpay requests are lowest priority in their system

0 coins

Four months??? I can't wait that long! Did they at least pay interest or something?

0 coins

lol interest? this is the government we're talking about 😂 they act like they're doing us a favor by giving us OUR money

I work at a nonprofit that helps people with unemployment issues. Here's what I tell our clients: 1) Try calling between 1:30-2:30pm when lunch rush is over but before end of day rush. 2) If you don't get through, try the TTY/TDD line and use relay service - often less crowded. 3) Contact both your assemblymember AND state senator. 4) If urgent, some people have had success with claimyr.com to get through.

0 coins

I used to work at NYSDOL and can confirm the 1:30-2:30 window is best. Also Thursdays tend to be less busy.

0 coins

What's this relay service? How does that work?

0 coins

It's a service for deaf/hard of hearing, but anyone can use it. Google 'IP Relay' and it'll connect you.

my roomate works for ny unemployment (not telling which office lol) and says theyre MASSIVELY understaffed right now. like 40% of normal staff levels. thats why nobody can get thru. not making excuses for them but thats the real situation.

Did you certify for those back weeks? Sometimes backpay issues are because you haven't actually claimed those specific weeks in the system, even if they verbally told you you'll get paid.

0 coins

Yes I certified for all of them! That's why it's so frustrating - everything on my end is complete, they just haven't released the funds

0 coins

Guys the BEST time to call is Tuesday at 8:15am. Not right when they open because everyone tries that. Wait 15 mins after opening. I did that today and only waited 7 minutes!!! 💯

0 coins

This is actually a galaxy brain move. Everyone tries right at 8am 👀

0 coins

can confirm this works sometimes. it's all about avoiding when everyone else is calling

0 coins

After weeks of frustration I finally broke down and used claimyr.com and it was worth every penny. Got through to an agent in 30 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own. The agent said my backpay was actually approved but stuck in some kind of payment limbo and they fixed it while I was on the phone. Money showed up 2 days later.

0 coins

how much did that cost if you dont mind me asking?

0 coins

I don't remember the exact amount but it was worth it considering I was owed thousands in backpay. My mental health couldn't take another day of calling and getting nowhere.

0 coins

I'm thinking of trying this. Did you have to provide them with any personal info or just your phone number?

0 coins

Just my phone number so they could connect the call when they got through. Super simple. They don't need any of your unemployment info.

0 coins

try mailing a PHYSICAL LETTER to them. sounds crazy but my friend did this and got a call back within a week. something about paper mail triggers a different process in their system. make sure to include your claim ID and contact info obviously.

0 coins

if u keep getting kicked off the phone, try using a landline if possible. cell service can drop for a split second and their system boots you. my success rate went wayyy up when i started using my parents landline.

0 coins

who even has landlines anymore lol

0 coins

old people and parents lol. borrow one if you can, it makes a difference for real
