Can't reach NY unemployment agent about promised backpay - need help ASAP
I've been trying to reach an actual human at the NY unemployment office for 3 weeks straight with no luck. They sent me a determination letter saying I'm eligible for backpay from January 2025, but nothing has shown up in my account yet. I've called literally 20+ times at different hours (morning, afternoon, evening) and either get disconnected or stuck in that endless menu system. I even tried the callback option but never got a call. How is anyone actually getting through to talk to a real person about their backpay? This is so frustrating!!

Try calling exactly at 8:00 AM when they open. Thats when I got through last month.

•I tried that twice last week! Got the 'all agents are busy' message both times and then it hung up on me after 20 minutes on hold.

Same issue here. Been waiting on backpay for 6 weeks now... determination letter shows approved but no $ in account. The phone system is a joke - I pressed every option and always end up in a loop. One time I waited 1.5 hours on hold and then they just disconnected me when I was 'next in line'. So frustrating!!!

•The NY unemployment system is DESIGNED to frustrate people and make them give up. It's the same story for years now! They approve you but then make it impossible to actually get the money. I bet they're hoping people just forget about it so they can keep the funds!!

After weeks of trying to reach someone about my backpay, I finally had success using Claimyr. It's a service that basically navigates the phone system for you and gets you in line with an agent. They called me when they had an agent on the line. Saved me so much frustration. Check out their demo video if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Thanks, I'll check this out. At this point I'm desperate. Did they actually help resolve your backpay issue once you got through?

•Yes! Once I actually got through to a live person, it took about 10 minutes to fix the issue. The agent said my backpay was approved but got stuck in processing. She released the payment while I was on the phone and I got it 2 days later.

If you're specifically dealing with backpay, you need to make sure you're selecting the right options in the phone menu. For backpay issues, press 2 for Payment Questions, then 3 for Payment Delays, then 1 for Approved But Not Received. This route typically has shorter wait times than the general questions line. Also, have you checked your payment history in your online account? Sometimes backpay will show as "pending" there with a release date even if the payment hasn't been issued yet. That can give you an idea of when to expect it without having to speak to someone.

•Thanks for the specific menu options! I've checked my payment history and there's nothing there - not even pending. The determination letter says I should get $3,820 in backpay for January-March 2025, but my account shows no record of it being processed at all.

•In that case, you definitely need to speak with a claims specialist. Those menu options should help, but if you're still having trouble getting through, the Claimyr service mentioned earlier might be worth trying. Backpay issues usually require manual intervention to resolve, especially if the system isn't showing it as pending.

•I sent 3 messages in the past 2 weeks through the portal and haven't gotten any response. Just the automatic "we received your message" email.

I was in a similar situation last month waiting for 6 weeks of backpay that was approved. I spent hours on the phone and finally got through by calling at exactly 7:58am on a Tuesday (they open at 8:00). I think Tuesdays and Wednesdays are less busy? Once I finally talked to someone, they told me my backpay was stuck because of a "system flag" on my account that required manual review. The agent pushed it through while I was on the phone and I got the money 3 days later. Keep trying early mornings!

•Thank you! I'll try again tomorrow morning (Tuesday) right before 8am. Did you use a specific phone number or just the main unemployment line?

•I used the main unemployment claims number (888-209-8124). Make sure you have your determination letter and NY.gov ID ready because they asked me for specific info from those. Good luck!!

UPDATE: I finally got through! I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned here and it actually worked. They connected me with an agent in about 25 minutes. The agent said my backpay was held up because of a "processing delay code" that needed manual override. She fixed it while I was on the phone and said I should receive the payment within 3 business days. Such a relief after weeks of trying! If anyone else is struggling to get through, the Claimyr website is claimyr.com - definitely worth it for me.

•I honestly don't remember the exact amount, but it wasn't much compared to the backpay I was waiting for. Check their website for current info. All I know is it saved me from weeks more frustration!

•Good point, I'll definitely keep checking. The agent gave me a confirmation number for the transaction so hopefully that means it's actually fixed.
