Is there any direct number for NY unemployment where a real human actually answers?

I've been trying to reach someone at NY unemployment for almost 2 weeks now. My claim was denied in August even though I was laid off in June through no fault of mine during company restructuring. They said I didn't earn enough in my base period which is completely wrong - I've been fulltime employed for 3 years! I've called the main number at least 37 times and always get stuck in the automated system that eventually hangs up on me. When I do get through, I'm on hold for 3+ hours then it disconnects. I've sent 5 emails through their contact form and gotten nothing back except automated replies. Even tried reaching out on Twitter. This is getting ridiculous - I have bills due and rent coming up. Does ANYONE know a direct number where an actual human being answers the phone? Or some secret extension that bypasses the robot system?

Welcome to the NY unemployment hellscape, where no human has ever answered a phone 🤡 I've called over 50 times myself last month. Their system is designed to frustrate you into giving up.

That's exactly what it feels like! Like they're hoping we'll just stop trying. But I literally can't afford to give up 😩

truth. i swear they have ONE person answering phones for the entire state.

The hellscape is exactly right. My theory is they have the phone system rigged to auto-disconnect after so many callers are on hold. Keeps their metrics looking better.

After dealing with the same issue last month, I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually calls and waits on hold FOR you, then connects you once they get a real person. Talking to an agent got my money unlocked so fast after weeks of nothing. They have a video explaining how it works too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait this actually sounds too good to be true. you sure this isnt some scam?

Nah I get the skepticism. I felt the same way but was desperate after 3 weeks of trying. It worked though - they just do the holding part for you then connect you when someone picks up. Changed everything for me.

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this besides just the person posting about it? 🤔

I've used it twice now. First time took about 90 mins for them to get someone, second time almost 3 hours. But both times I got through without having to sit there with my phone to my ear the whole time. claimyr.com saved my sanity

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

There's no direct number that always works. The best strategy ive found is to call exacty at 8:00am when they open and choose option 2, then 1, then 3 when prompted. Still a mess but slightly better odds.

This is what I do too. Also try Thursdays - for some reason they seem less busy.

I tried this for 2 weeks straight and still couldn't get through. NY unemployment is straight up broken.

I finally got through by calling my state assembly person. Their office has special contacts at unemployment and they helped push my claim through after I'd been trying for a month. Try looking up who represents your district and email their office explaining your situation.

Have you tried the 888-209-8124 number? That's their main line, but if you call between 7:55-8:05am and press 1, then 3, then 2, then wait for the language options and press 9 (even though it's not offered), sometimes it puts you in a different queue. Worked for me after literally hundreds of failed calls.

This some video game cheat code level stuff 😂 gonna try tomorrow morning

Thanks for this! Will definitely try the 9 trick tomorrow. Will report back if it works!

pressing 9 doesn't do anything special, it's just random luck if you get through or not. I've tried every combo possible.

I'm actually a former NY unemployment temp worker (quit bc it was so dysfunctional). Here's what I know: The direct lines agents use are never given to the public. There are about 1/3 as many agents as needed. Your best bet is to use something that automates the calling and holding process like claimyr.com - several of my colleagues mentioned people using it successfully. Only other option is to keep trying the main line different times of day. Wednesdays seem less busy for some reason.

Appreciate the insider info. Any other tips from your time working there?

Yeah - never say you "forgot" to certify or "made a mistake" when filing. Those trigger fraud investigations automatically. Always say it was a system error or technical problem. Those get resolved much faster.

did your supervisors know about that claimyr service? were they ok with it?

Supervisors didn't care how people got into the queue, they just dealt with whoever was on the line. The whole system is held together with duct tape and hope.

Spent 3 months in this nightmare myself. The ONLY thing that worked was having multiple phones call simultaneously at exactly 8:00:00 am. Had my wife, brother, and myself all calling on different phones. One of us would eventually get through after about 5-7 days of trying this method. Its ridiculous we have to do this but the system is completely broken.

This is literally what I had to do too. Like running a call center just to reach a call center 🙃

Have u tried DMing them on Twitter? Surprisingly I got a response there after weeks of nothing on phone. They asked for my info and helped sort it out.

I tried tweeting at them twice but got nothing back. Which account did you contact?

@NYSLabor - but make sure your DMs are open and try during business hours. Took them 2 days to get back to me.

not a direct answer to your q but make sure your claim denial reason is actually valid. I got denied saying I didn't earn enough in base period but they were looking at the wrong quarters. Had to appeal and then they found I was eligible all along. Such a broken system

0 coins

StarSailor

•

That's exactly what happened to me! They're saying I didn't earn enough but I definitely did. How long did your appeal take?

0 coins

Zara Shah

•

took almost 7 weeks which is why you gotta keep calling. Filing the appeal online isn't enough - you need to talk to someone to push it through.

Try this email: nysdolissues@labor.ny.gov - it worked for me when no calls were getting through. Include your name, last 4 of SSN, and phone number in the email with a clear explanation of your problem. I got a call back within 48 hours.

Honestly? After 6 weeks of trying everything, I used claimyr.com and it was worth every penny. Got connected to a real agent within 2 hours and they fixed everything wrong with my claim. I was at my breaking point before that.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

0 coins

Luca Ferrari

•

They don't promise to fix your claim - they just get you past the impossible part of actually connecting with a human being. Once you're talking to someone, most issues can be resolved in minutes. That was my experience anyway.

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

Actually I used this too. It's literally just a service that sits on hold for you. When they get a human they call you and connect you. Nothing magical but saved me hours of hold music lol

If your claim says you didn't earn enough but you know you did, you NEED to talk to someone. I had the EXACT same issue and it turned out they had my employer's quarterly report missing. Once I got through and explained, they fixed it right away and I got backpay for everything. KEEP TRYING!

This whole thing reminds me of when I tried getting concert tickets back in the day. Site would crash, phone lines busy. The unemployment system is stuck in 1995 while trying to handle 2023 problems.

Lmaooo this is the best comparison. Except at least with concert tickets you can eventually give up. Can't exactly give up on getting money to live 💀
