Need NY unemployment phone number to speak with a real person - urgent!

I've been trying for DAYS to reach someone at NY unemployment and I'm about to lose my mind! Every time I call the main number it just gives me automated responses that don't help with my specific situation. I need to talk to an actual human being about my claim. Does anyone have a direct number or extension that actually works to get through to a real person? My benefits have been pending for almost 3 weeks now and my rent is due next week. Any help would be so appreciated!

The official number is 1-888-209-8124, but we all know how impossible it is to get through. Your best bet is to call exactly at 8:00 AM when they open. I've found that Monday and Tuesday are actually the worst days to call - try Thursday mid-morning if possible. Also, if you have a specific question about your claim, sometimes the online message system gets a response within 48 hours. Have you tried that route?

Thanks for responding! Yes I've tried calling right at 8am and still got nowhere. Just endless hold music then disconnected after an hour and a half! I did send a message through the online portal 4 days ago but haven't heard anything back. My claim shows 'pending review' but doesn't say why or what they need from me. So frustrating!!

What's the 518 number? I'll try anything at this point! And thanks for the prompt sequence - I'll give that a shot tomorrow morning.

I was in the same situation last month and wasted nearly a week trying to get through. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr. It's a service that basically keeps dialing for you and gets you in the queue without having to do it manually. I was skeptical at first but it connected me to an agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE and their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out. Honestly, it was worth it to finally get my claim sorted out.

I've never heard of this before. Does it really work? I'm desperate enough to try pretty much anything at this point. Did you actually talk to a real person who could help with your claim?

Yes, it connected me to an actual NYSDOL claims specialist. The service just handles the calling and getting through the phone system part, then you take over once you're connected with an agent. The rep I spoke with was able to see that my claim had a verification flag on it that was causing the delay, and she removed it while I was on the call. My payment came through two days later.

The phone system is a JOKE!! I've been collecting NY unemployment on and off for years and it's NEVER been this bad. They don't care about us AT ALL. I spent 6 hours last week trying to get through. SIX HOURS!!!! And then when I finally got someone they transferred me and I got disconnected. Started crying right there in my kitchen. The whole system is designed to make people give up.

While I understand your frustration, the system is actually handling a much larger volume of claims than in previous years. The department is still working through a significant staffing shortage. They've been hiring and training new agents, but it takes time. In the meantime, try using the online message system with very specific questions, as that queue is often processed faster than the general phone queue.

I just want to mention that if your claim specifically says "pending review" that usually means they're verifying information with your previous employer or checking on eligibility issues. Sometimes calling won't actually speed this up as it's in a separate review queue. However, if it's been more than 3 weeks, you should definitely try to speak with someone as that's longer than the standard review period. One thing that worked for me: call your state assembly person's office. I was surprised, but my assemblywoman's office has a staff person who deals with unemployment issues and they were able to escalate my case. Worth a try while you're also attempting the direct route.

That's good to know about the "pending review" status - thank you! I didn't realize contacting my assembly person was an option. I'll look up their contact info right now. Did you just call their main office number?

Yes, I called the district office (not the Albany office) and explained my situation. They took down my information and had me sign a release form so they could inquire about my case. I heard back from unemployment within 3 business days after they got involved. Different offices might have different processes, but it's definitely worth trying.

I had this same issue lol. My claim was stuck on pending for like a month and i couldnt get anyone on the phone. I ended up having to try that claimyr thing someone else mentioned and it got me through. The lady on the phone told me my identity verification didnt go through properly and she fixed it while i was on the phone. But tbh I think they just put everything on "pending" hoping people will give up and not collect

That's exactly what I'm worried about - that there's some small issue that could be fixed in 5 minutes if I could just talk to someone! I think I'll try Claimyr tomorrow morning. Thanks for sharing your experience!

For anyone dealing with long wait times, here's some helpful information: 1. The main NY unemployment phone number (1-888-209-8124) has the most staff but also the highest call volume. Operating hours are 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Monday-Friday. 2. If your claim says "pending review," this typically means one of three things: - Identity verification issue - Employer response pending - Eligibility determination needed 3. Alternative contact methods: - Use the secure message center in your online account - Email through the contact form on the NYSDOL website - Call the alternative claims center: 1-888-783-1370 4. As others have mentioned, contacting your state representative can help escalate cases that have exceeded normal processing times (typically 2-3 weeks). The department is working to improve response times, but current average wait time is approximately 38 minutes when you do connect.

Thank you for all this detailed info! The alternative claims center number is new to me - I'll add that to my list to try. 38 minutes doesn't sound bad at all compared to never getting through! I'd happily wait on hold for an hour if I could just talk to someone who could help.

update????? did u ever get thru?

Yes!! I tried the Claimyr service this morning and actually got through to someone in about 25 minutes! Turns out there was an issue with my identity verification that needed to be cleared. The agent fixed it while I was on the phone and said my payments should process within 3 business days. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!
