I was in a similar situation last year and had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about my benefit calculation. The phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. I ended up using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent who explained exactly how my benefits were calculated. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful than trying to call repeatedly.
The whole system is so confusing! I got laid off 3 months ago and I'm still not 100% sure how they calculated my weekly amount. NYS Department of Labor sent me a monetary determination letter but the math doesn't seem right to me. I think they might have missed some of my wages from when I had two jobs last year.
honestly the whole system is messed up, you work your butt off and when you actually need help there's always some technicality why you don't qualify for anything. employers know exactly how to screw you over while staying within the law
Document EVERYTHING - every conversation with your employer, all medical records, any emails about your request for time off. If this goes to an unemployment hearing you'll need proof that you had no choice but to take the time off for medical reasons. The burden of proof is on you to show it wasn't a voluntary quit.
Wait, should I be worried if mine has been pending for 3 weeks?? I got fired for attendance issues (had to take care of my sick mom) and now I'm freaking out that they're going to deny me. Does anyone know if that affects approval time?
I was in a similar situation last year and honestly the 26 weeks went by faster than I expected. If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor by phone to ask questions about your claim, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really saved me when I had issues with my weekly claim getting stuck.

dont forget about the work search thing too!! you have to do 3 work search activities every week to keep getting benefits. lots of people get disqualified for not doing that properly. also if you turn down a job offer that NYS considers suitable you can lose benefits

•Good point about work search requirements. It's actually 3 work search activities per week in New York, and they need to be documented in your work search record.

The whole system is so confusing. I got disqualified initially because they said I quit voluntarily, but I was actually laid off due to budget cuts. Had to go through a whole appeal process to prove it. NYS Department of Labor really needs to make their eligibility criteria clearer on the website.
