Did you have any issues during your initial application that might have triggered adjudication? Sometimes even small discrepancies can delay payments while they review your case. Check your account for any messages or requests for additional documentation.
I've been trying to get through to the NYS Department of Labor for weeks to ask questions about my claim and the phone system is impossible! Does anyone know if there's a way to actually talk to a human being there? The automated system just hangs up on me every time.
The unemployment rate is just a number that doesn't reflect how BROKEN the whole system is!! I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor adjudication for 2 months and they keep asking for the same documents over and over. The rate could be 1% and their system would still be a nightmare to deal with.
The whole system is a joke honestly. They make you jump through hoops for benefits you already paid into through payroll taxes. And don't get me started on the job search requirements - you have to apply to 3 jobs per week and keep detailed records or they'll cut you off.
Just to clarify the timeline: Week 1 is your waiting period (no payment), then if approved you'll receive benefits starting week 2. Maximum benefit period is 26 weeks. Your weekly benefit amount depends on your previous earnings, with a maximum of $504 per week in 2025. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every Sunday and documenting your job search activities.
I had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about this exact question when I was filing my claim. The phone lines are always jammed and the website doesn't really explain the funding clearly. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual agent who explained how the employer tax system works. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Way easier than spending hours on hold trying to get basic information.

ugh the whole system is so stressful! I filed 3 weeks ago and my claim is STILL pending because my old company hasn't responded yet. Like how hard is it to fill out a form?? NYS Department of Labor should just approve claims automatically if employers don't respond on time

•I had a similar issue trying to reach someone at NYS Department of Labor about my employer's delayed response. Calling their main number was impossible - always busy or disconnected. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get answers about my claim status.

Most employers just confirm the separation details honestly. The ones who fight every claim usually get flagged by NYS Department of Labor for review. Companies know that fighting legitimate layoffs just wastes everyone's time and can hurt their relationship with the unemployment office for future issues.
