NYS Department of Labor unemployment claim - how long does it take to get approved after filing?

Just submitted my unemployment application on the my.ny.gov portal yesterday and wondering what timeline I should expect. My former employer didn't contest anything when I left (layoff situation) so hoping it goes smoothly. I've been reading conflicting info online about processing times. Some say 2-3 weeks, others mention months if it goes into adjudication. Can anyone share their recent experience with NYS Department of Labor claim processing? Really need to plan my finances accordingly.

Processing times vary significantly depending on your situation. If your claim is straightforward with no red flags, you might see a determination within 2-3 weeks. However, if NYS Department of Labor needs to verify employment details or investigate separation circumstances, it could take 4-6 weeks or longer in adjudication.

What kind of red flags would trigger a longer review? My separation was pretty standard - company downsizing.

took me exactly 18 days last year but that was before the holidays. filed on a tuesday, got approved the following thursday. make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting!

Good to know! Yeah I already filed my first weekly claim. Did you have to do any job search activities during those first few weeks?

The initial claim processing is just the first step. Even after approval, there can be delays in actual payment. I'd recommend calling NYS Department of Labor if you don't hear anything after 3 weeks, but good luck getting through. When I had issues reaching them, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting disconnected.

Never heard of that service before but the phone situation with NYS Department of Labor is definitely frustrating. Might check it out if I run into problems.

Mine got stuck in adjudication for 7 weeks because my previous employer initially said I quit but then corrected it to layoff. The back and forth was ridiculous! Even though it eventually got approved retroactively, those weeks without income were brutal.

That sounds terrible! Did you end up getting all the back payments once it was resolved?

Yes, got everything backdated to my original filing date. But the stress of not knowing was awful.

honestly the whole system is a mess... took forever for my cousin last month and she had to jump through so many hoops just to prove she was laid off
