NYS Department of Labor asking about three types of unemployment on job search form - confused
I'm filling out my weekly certification and there's a section asking me to identify which of the following are the three types of unemployment. I thought unemployment was just unemployment but apparently there are different categories? The form has like 6 options and I need to pick 3. I don't want to mess this up and get my claim flagged. Has anyone else seen this question before? What are the correct answers supposed to be?

Yes, this is a standard question on some NYS Department of Labor forms. The three main types of unemployment are: 1) Frictional unemployment (people between jobs), 2) Structural unemployment (skills don't match available jobs), and 3) Cyclical unemployment (due to economic downturns). These are basic economic concepts they sometimes test to verify you're actually filling out the form yourself.

•Thank you! That makes sense. I was overthinking it and worried I'd pick the wrong ones and get disqualified or something.

•It's on the job search activity log that I have to submit. Maybe it depends on when you started your claim?

I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to clarify questions like this on my forms. Someone here recommended Claimyr (claimyr.com) for getting through to actual agents when you can't get through the regular phone lines. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to verify anything about your weekly certification requirements.

•How much does that cost though? I'm already struggling financially which is why I'm on unemployment in the first place.

•I found it helpful for getting answers quickly instead of wasting hours trying to call. Sometimes it's worth it to avoid potential claim issues.

Honestly the NYS Department of Labor makes these forms so confusing on purpose. Like why do I need to know economic theory just to get my benefits? Just give me my money and let me find a job!

seasonal unemployment is another type too right? or is that part of cyclical?

•Seasonal unemployment is usually considered a subset of structural unemployment, though some economists classify it separately. For NYS Department of Labor purposes, stick with the three main categories I mentioned above.
