Need help understanding the four types of unemployment for NYS Department of Labor weekly claim certification
I'm filling out my weekly claim certification and there's a section asking about employment status that seems to reference different types of unemployment. I know there are supposedly four main categories but I'm not sure how they apply to my NYS Department of Labor claim. I was laid off from my manufacturing job in December due to company downsizing, but now I'm wondering if I should be categorizing myself differently. Does anyone know what the four types are and how they affect my weekly claims? I don't want to mess up my certification and cause issues with my benefits.

The four main types are: 1) Frictional unemployment (between jobs voluntarily), 2) Structural unemployment (skills don't match available jobs), 3) Cyclical unemployment (economic downturns), and 4) Seasonal unemployment (predictable seasonal layoffs). Based on your situation with company downsizing, you'd likely fall under cyclical unemployment. For your NYS Department of Labor weekly certification, just answer honestly about your job search activities and availability.

•Thank you! That makes sense. So the downsizing would be cyclical since it's related to economic conditions affecting the company. I'll continue certifying as usual.

•You're right, these economic categories don't directly impact your weekly certification questions. NYS Department of Labor cares more about whether you're actively seeking work and available to accept employment. The unemployment types are more for statistical/economic analysis purposes.

I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor when I had questions about my claim status. Ended up using Claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent - they have this system that calls you back when an agent is available. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call and getting busy signals.

•Did they charge you for that service? I've been trying to get through for weeks about an adjudication issue.

•Yeah there's a fee but honestly worth it when you need to actually talk to someone. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

The whole unemployment system is so confusing! I keep worrying I'm going to answer something wrong on my weekly claim and lose my benefits. Why can't they just make it simple - you're either unemployed or you're not, right??

These academic definitions don't mean much when you're just trying to survive between jobs. NYS Department of Labor bureaucracy loves their categories and classifications but at the end of the day we're all just people trying to pay rent while looking for work.
