What are the 4 types of unemployment NYS Department of Labor recognizes for benefits?
I'm trying to understand my unemployment situation better and keep hearing about different 'types' of unemployment. My cousin mentioned there are 4 main categories that economists talk about, but I'm confused about how this applies to my NYS Department of Labor claim. I was laid off from my retail job last month due to store closure and filed for regular unemployment benefits. Are there actually different types of unemployment that affect eligibility or benefit amounts? I want to make sure I'm filing under the right category when I do my weekly claims.

The 4 types economists reference are frictional (between jobs), structural (skills mismatch), cyclical (economic downturns), and seasonal unemployment. For NYS Department of Labor purposes though, what matters more is your reason for separation - laid off, fired, quit, etc. Your retail layoff due to store closure would typically qualify for regular UI benefits as long as you meet the work history requirements.

•That makes sense! So the economic categories don't really change how I file my weekly claims or anything?

yeah the academic stuff doesn't really matter for your claim. what matters is can you prove you lost your job through no fault of your own and are you actively looking for work. been on unemployment twice and never had to classify what 'type' it was

From a practical standpoint with NYS Department of Labor, focus on these benefit categories instead: regular unemployment insurance, standby status (if your employer expects to recall you), or extended benefits during high unemployment periods. The job search requirements are the same regardless of which economic 'type' caused your unemployment.

•This is really helpful! I was getting so confused reading articles online about unemployment types. Sounds like I just need to focus on doing my weekly claims correctly and meeting the job search requirements.

I had a nightmare trying to reach someone at NYS Department of Labor to clarify my situation when I was between categories. Spent weeks calling and getting disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really saved me when I needed to verify my claim status.

•Good to know there are options if I run into issues! Hopefully my claim stays straightforward.

honestly the NYS Department of Labor system is so confusing anyway, doesn't matter what type of unemployment you have if you can't get through to anyone when there's a problem lol
