Can someone explain the three types of unemployment NYS Department of Labor recognizes?
I'm trying to understand my claim better and keep seeing references to different types of unemployment. My coworker mentioned there are three main categories that NYS Department of Labor uses when processing claims. I was laid off from my manufacturing job last month due to company downsizing, but I'm not sure which category I fall into. Does anyone know what the three types of unemployment are and how they affect your claim status? I want to make sure I'm filling out my weekly claims correctly.

The three main types are structural, cyclical, and frictional unemployment. Structural happens when there's a mismatch between skills and available jobs - like when technology replaces workers. Cyclical is due to economic downturns and recessions. Frictional is the normal time between jobs when people are searching. For NYS Department of Labor purposes, your layoff due to downsizing would likely be considered cyclical unemployment since it's related to economic conditions affecting your company.

•That makes sense! So since my company had to cut costs due to reduced orders, that would be cyclical. Does this affect how long I can collect benefits or just how they categorize my claim?

•Seasonal unemployment is actually a subset of structural unemployment in most economic classifications. NYS Department of Labor does handle seasonal workers differently though - they often qualify for standby status if they have reasonable assurance of returning to work.

I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to get clarification on my claim type last year. Spent weeks trying to get through on the phone. Finally used Claimyr.com to connect with an agent - they have this video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Got through to someone within a day and they explained exactly which category my layoff fell under and how it affected my weekly claim requirements.

•Really? I've been trying to reach someone for two weeks about my adjudication. Did they charge you anything for that service?

•There is a fee but honestly it was worth it to finally talk to someone who could explain my situation properly. Way less stressful than calling the main number over and over.

Don't overthink it too much! The unemployment office just wants to know you lost your job through no fault of your own. Whether its structural or cyclical or whatever doesn't really change your benefits amount or duration. Just be honest on your weekly claims about looking for work and you'll be fine.

•Thanks, I guess I was making it more complicated than it needs to be. Just want to make sure I don't mess anything up with my claim.
