NYS Department of Labor classification - what are four types of unemployment on my claim?

I'm trying to understand my unemployment situation better and keep seeing references to different 'types of unemployment' in NYS Department of Labor materials. Can someone explain what the four main types are? I filed my claim last month after getting laid off from my manufacturing job, but I want to make sure I understand how they classify different situations. My weekly claims have been going through fine but I'm curious about the technical side of how they categorize these things.

The four main types economists and agencies like NYS Department of Labor recognize are: 1) Frictional unemployment - when people are between jobs or entering the workforce, 2) Structural unemployment - when skills don't match available jobs, 3) Cyclical unemployment - from economic downturns, and 4) Seasonal unemployment - predictable job losses like construction in winter. Your layoff sounds like cyclical unemployment if it was due to company downsizing or economic factors.

That makes sense! My layoff was definitely due to reduced orders at the plant, so cyclical sounds right. Does NYS Department of Labor treat these differently when processing claims?

yeah i think theres also voluntary vs involuntary unemployment but not sure if thats the same thing ur talking about

For practical purposes with your NYS Department of Labor claim, what matters most is whether you're eligible for regular UI benefits. The economic classification doesn't really change how they process your weekly claims or job search requirements. As long as you were laid off through no fault of your own and meet the wage requirements, you should be good regardless of which 'type' it technically falls under.

This is so confusing! I've been trying to reach NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my claim status and can never get through. The phone lines are always busy and my online account just shows 'under review' with no details.

I had the same problem with getting through to NYS Department of Labor agents until I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They basically handle the calling for you and connect you directly to an agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself and finally got my adjudication issue resolved.

I remember learning about this in my economics class years ago but honestly the categories seem more academic than practical when you're just trying to get your unemployment benefits processed lol

The NYS Department of Labor system is so backwards anyway. They probably have their own weird internal classifications that don't match anything logical. I've been dealing with them for months on an overpayment issue and every agent tells me something different. The whole system needs an overhaul!!!

I understand the frustration, but the classification system is actually pretty standardized across states. The real issue is usually communication and wait times, not the underlying categories themselves.
