Waiting 4 months for NY unemployment back payments - can't get through on phone!!
I've been waiting for my NY unemployment back payments since August 2025, and it's already December now! I even called them a couple months ago and they said all they have to do is RELEASE it, but every time I try calling now it's impossible to get through. Every single day I hear the same message: "due to high calling volume unfortunately our agents are busy you going to have to call back later"... but seriously, EVERY DAY???? I've tried mornings, afternoons, different days of the week. Nothing works! Guys I don't know what to do anymore 😅😅😅😅 please help! My account shows the payments as 'pending release' but there's literally no way to contact anyone. Has anyone recently managed to get through to a real person??

This is pretty common right now with NYSDOL. They're dealing with a huge backlog from the system update they did in October. Your best bet is to call right when they open at 8am, but even then it's tough. Have you tried sending a secure message through your online account? Sometimes they respond to those within a week or so.

•Thanks for the tip! I did try calling at 8am THREE times this week but still got the same message. I sent a secure message about 3 weeks ago but haven't heard anything back. Is there any specific wording I should use in the message to get their attention? I'm getting desperate here... rent is due soon ðŸ˜

•Right?? It feels like they're avoiding us on purpose! Have you found ANY way to make progress? I've tried everything I can think of...

I was in the exact same situation last month with 3 months of back payments stuck in 'pending release' status. What worked for me was using Claimyr to get through to an agent - they basically hold your place in line and call you when they connect with NYSDOL. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Took about 40 minutes to get through but once I had an actual person on the line, they were able to release all my payments within 5 minutes. The agent told me there was just a flag on my account that needed to be removed manually. Money was in my account 2 days later.

•Wow, this sounds promising! I've never heard of Claimyr before. So it actually worked for you with NY unemployment specifically? Did they explain why your payments were stuck in the first place?

•Yes, it worked specifically with NYSDOL. The agent said there was a verification flag on my account from when I had submitted my ID documents. The system had accepted them but never removed the flag automatically. She manually cleared it while I was on the phone and confirmed my payments would process. The back pay hit my account just like she said. Without getting through to a human, I'd probably still be waiting.

have you tried the unemployment office in person??? sometimes thats better than phone. my cousin went in and got her issue fixed same day.

•Most NY unemployment offices don't handle claim issues in person anymore - they primarily do career services in-person. Phone and online are the main ways to resolve payment issues. They specifically tell people NOT to come to physical locations for claim problems.

I work at an employment assistance nonprofit and we're hearing about this issue constantly right now. Here's what's happening: NYSDOL implemented a new payment verification system in October 2025 that's creating a huge backlog. When they say they just need to "release" your payment, it means you've been approved but the payment is stuck in this new verification queue. Unfortunately, the only solution right now IS to speak to an agent who can manually override the verification hold. Sending messages through your account helps document your attempts to resolve the issue, but phone contact is really the fastest way to fix it. If you can't get through via phone after multiple attempts, I'd recommend: 1. Contact your state assembly member's office - they have dedicated contacts at NYSDOL 2. Document all your call attempts (dates/times) for possible retroactive appeals 3. Continue certifying weekly even while waiting for back payments The good news is once you DO reach someone, these issues are typically resolved quite quickly.

•This is so helpful, thank you! I had no idea about contacting my assembly member - I'll try that tomorrow. And definitely going to keep documenting everything. Do you know if the assembly member's office is usually able to help speed things up? I'm going on 4+ months now and it's getting ridiculous.

•Yes, assembly members often can help. Their offices have special liaisons at NYSDOL who can escalate cases. The success rate varies, but we've seen many cases get resolved within 1-2 weeks after assembly member involvement. Just be sure to provide them with your claim ID number and a timeline of your attempts to contact NYSDOL so they have all the information they need.

Here's what's actually happening with the "release" situation: When a NYSDOL representative tells you they just need to "release" your payment, they're referring to removing a temporary system hold. These holds can happen for various legitimate reasons: - Identity verification checks (especially if you've recently updated any personal information) - System flagging patterns that require manual review - The October 2025 system migration that affected many accounts - Break-in-claim verification requirements The frustrating part is that these holds require manual intervention - there is no automatic resolution after a certain timeframe. And with the current call volume, many legitimate claims are stuck in limbo. I recommend: 1. Continue trying to call early morning (7:55am) and be ready to hit redial repeatedly 2. Use the secure message system with very specific subject lines ("Payment Release Request - Claim #XXXX") 3. Contact your state representative as another commenter suggested 4. Document everything for potential interest penalties (NYS does pay interest on long-delayed benefits in some circumstances) This system-wide issue should improve by late December according to the latest NYSDOL communications.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll definitely use that specific subject line for my next message. Do you think I'd qualify for interest since it's been over 4 months? And is there anything specific I should say when I actually get through to an agent to make sure they completely fix the issue?

•Yes, at 4+ months you'd likely qualify for interest payments, but you'll need to specifically request it once your base issue is resolved. When you do reach an agent, ask these specific questions: 1. "What specifically is causing the payment hold on my account?" 2. "Is there any additional information you need from me to release ALL pending payments?" 3. "Can you verify there are no other issues that might delay payment after this is resolved?" 4. "What is the exact timeframe for receiving my payments once you process this?" 5. "Should I request interest payment now or through a separate process?" Get the agent's name and ID number if possible. This creates accountability and gives you a reference if you need to follow up again.

I finally got through to NYSDOL!!! Used Claimyr from the suggestions here and was connected to an agent in about 35 minutes (after trying for WEEKS on my own). The agent said there was a "verification hold" on my account from when I uploaded my ID back in August that never cleared properly. She removed it while I was on the phone and said all my back payments should process in 1-3 business days! Thank you all SO MUCH for the help - will update when the money actually hits my account. What a relief!!!

•Great news! This is exactly the kind of hold issue we've been seeing. Make sure to keep certifying weekly as normal, and if the payments don't arrive within 3 business days, document that and call back. Glad you got it resolved!
