Stuck waiting for NY unemployment back pay since October - can't get through to ANY agents
I've been waiting for my retroactive unemployment payments since October and here we are in February. I managed to reach someone back in December who told me everything was good on my account and they just needed to release the funds. Since then, I've been calling every single day but keep getting that annoying message 'due to high call volume, our agents are currently busy, please call back later.' EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. The same thing! I've tried calling at different times - early morning, lunch time, right before they close - nothing works. At this point I'm completely out of ideas and getting desperate. My savings are almost gone and I need that money NOW. Has anyone actually been able to get through to a real person lately? Any suggestions for what I should try next?

Same boat here. Been trying for WEEKS to get someone on the damn phone. The system is completely broken. I finally got through using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they basically wait on hold for you and then call you when they get a real person. Talking to an agent got my payments unlocked the same day after months of nothing. Seriously was the only way I finally talked to a human at unemployment. Check out this video about it too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•wait does this actually work? I've been calling for 3 weeks straight and haven't gotten through once

•100% worked for me. I was super skeptical too but my buddy used it first and told me about it. They call and stay on hold, then when they get someone they connect you. Got my $3800 in back payments released same day after the call.

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•no catch man, they just save you from waiting on hold for hours. after months of getting nowhere with ny unemployment it was worth it to finally talk to someone who could actually help

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? not falling for another unemployment 'hack'

•I get the skepticism, seriously. The difference is this isn't claiming to fix your unemployment issues - it just gets you past the phone system. The agent I talked to fixed my claim in like 5 minutes once I actually got through. Check the video I linked

I'm literally in the exact same situation!!! Been waiting since November for back pay and I can NEVER get through. I even tried calling at 7:58am right when they open and still got the same stupid message. The system is rigged to keep us from talking to anyone!!!

Have u tried emailing them? Sometimes u can get a response that way, but it takes like a week or two. You can also try contacting ur local state rep - mine helped me get my benefits unfrozen last summer when I had a similar issue.

•I sent like 6 emails and only got automated responses. How do I find my local rep? Never thought of trying that

•Google your address + 'ny state representative' and it should come up. They have staff who help with stuff like this all the time. Send them a detailed email about your situation.

•I tried this route too and my rep's office never responded 😡 total waste of time

So here's what helped me after dealing with the same bs for months. I know it sounds crazy but I finally got through by hitting * then # repeatedly after that voice message starts. Not sure why but it pushed me into a different queue and I only waited 20 mins. Try it tomorrow morning right when they open. Worked for me twice now.

•Definitely gonna try this tomorrow! Worth a shot at this point. Thanks!

•That star pound trick hasn't worked since they updated the phone system in December. They patched that workaround.

COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO GETTING YOUR BACK PAY FROM NY UNEMPLOYMENT: I've been through this nightmare multiple times and have learned some tricks that actually work. Here's what you need to do: 1) Stop calling at peak hours (9-11am and 1-3pm). Try right at 8:00am or after 3:30pm. 2) The online messaging system is actually working better than calls for some issues. Log into your account, go to messages, and write a VERY specific request about your back pay. 3) If you absolutely need to talk to someone, use Claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold and call you when they get a representative. It's honestly the most reliable way to get through these days. 4) Document EVERYTHING. Take screenshots, write down who you spoke with and what they told you. 5) As a last resort, contact your state assembly person. Google "NY state assembly [your zip code]" to find yours. Their staff can often cut through red tape. The system is intentionally difficult to navigate, but don't give up. Your back pay is legally yours and they have to release it eventually. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask questions if you need more specific advice.

•THIS!!! Wish I had this info months ago. The claimyr service is seriously the only thing that worked after 2 months of trying everything else.

•The messaging system is useless now, they never respond. I sent 12 messages over 3 weeks and got nothing back.

•It depends on how you word it. Put "URGENT: RELEASE OF AUTHORIZED BACK PAY" in the subject line. They prioritize certain keywords.

•Thank you for all this detailed info! Gonna try Claimyr tomorrow since nothing else has worked. At this point I just need to talk to a human being who can fix this.

not to be that person but have u checked ur spam folder? some of the notices go there and they expect u to respond within like 7 days. my friend almost lost her benefits cuz the email went to spam

•Yeah I check my spam folder obsessively at this point lol. Nothing there unfortunately.

ny unemployment is literally the worst. i had to wait 4 months for backpay last year and only got it after i filed a complaint with the state labor board AND emailed my state senator. try both of those routes.

There's a class action lawsuit being filed about these delayed payments. Look up 'NY unemployment delays lawsuit 2023' and you'll find the form to join as a plaintiff. Won't get your money faster but might get interest on it eventually.

•Had no idea about this! Will definitely look into it. Thanks for the tip

•The lawsuit is legit but they're not taking new plaintiffs after January 15th. Too late now unfortunately.

•That's not true, they extended the deadline to March 1st. Check their updated website.

Do u still have access to ur account online? Cuz for me I was waiting forever then realized my account was locked for "verification purposes" 🤡 had to upload my ID again even tho they already had it

Zara Khan
•Yeah I can still log in and everything looks normal. Says my claim is approved, payments are just "pending" forever 😫

If you have Twitter try tweeting at NYSDOL and the governor. Sounds stupid but they hate the public embarrassment and sometimes respond faster. Make sure to use their handles and be super specific about how long you've been waiting.

This is why I'm moving out of NY as soon as I can. The whole system is designed to make people give up. Try the automated callback system on their website - it sometimes works when the phone lines don't.

•What automated callback system??? I don't see this anywhere on their site

Ethan Wilson
•It's buried in their site. Go to Contact Us > Phone > Request Callback. But tbh it rarely works these days. I waited 2 weeks for a callback that never came.

Pro tip: if u keep getting that message try calling the fraud department number instead. They sometimes transfer u to regular agents and the wait is way shorter.

•don't do this anymore, they catch on and will hang up on you. they changed their policy in december.

Have u tried calling from a different phone number? They might be blocking ur number if u called too many times in one day (yes they actually do this 🙄
