How long to receive NY unemployment back payments after DOL approves release?

I've been fighting with NY unemployment for the past 2 months over some weeks they owed me from January. Finally got through to a specialist last week who reviewed my case and said they're going to release my back payments. They said it was approved but couldn't tell me exactly when I'd receive the money. It's been 6 days and nothing in my account yet. Does anyone know how long it typically takes for back payments to show up after they say they're releasing them? Getting kinda desperate here since I'm counting on that $2,450 to catch up on bills! The status in my account just says 'payment pending' with no date.

In my experience, NY DOL back payments usually hit your account within 3-5 business days after they're released. Sometimes it can take up to 10 business days if there are any issues with your payment method or if there's a high volume of claims being processed. Did the specialist give you any kind of confirmation number or tell you if there were any additional steps needed?

Thanks for responding! No, they didn't give me any confirmation number - just said 'it's been approved for release' and that I should see it 'soon'. Didn't mention any additional steps. I'm on day 6 now (4 business days) so maybe I just need to be patient a little longer?

lol "soon" could mean anything with NYSDOL. i waited TWO MONTHS for my back pay last winter after they said it was approved. kept calling and they just said 'its in the system

Two MONTHS?? Oh god, I hope that's not what happens to me. Did you do anything special to finally get them to release it?

nope just waited. one day it just showed up in my account. no warning or anything

Back payments can vary significantly depending on what caused the delay in the first place. If it was a simple administrative hold, you might see it within 5-7 business days. If there was an investigation or adjudication involved, it could take 2-3 weeks. Some things that might help: 1. Check your payment history on the NY unemployment website daily 2. Make sure your direct deposit info is correct 3. Look for any messages or alerts in your online account 4. If it's been more than 10 business days, definitely call again One important thing - if they said it's been "released" rather than "approved for release," these are technically different statuses in their system and might affect timing.

This is really helpful, thank you! They definitely said "approved for release" not just "released" so maybe that's why it's taking longer. My direct deposit info is correct (I've received regular payments before), and I don't see any messages in my account. I'll give it until next Monday before I start panicking.

THEY ARE ALWAYS LYING ABOUT TIMEFRAMES!!!! I waited 6 weeks after a "release" in February! Every time I called they gave me a different story. "It's processing" then "there's a system delay" then "we need to review again" then back to "it's processing"... RIDICULOUS! The system is BROKEN!!! When I finally got the money there was NO explanation for the delay. I'd start calling EVERY day if I were you.

Oh no, that's terrible! I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I'll definitely call again if nothing happens by early next week. It's so frustrating because I really need this money.

After struggling with similar delays for my back payments last month, I finally got through to someone who could actually help using Claimyr. It's a service that helps you bypass the phone wait times and actually get a real person from NY unemployment on the line. They got me connected in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. I was skeptical at first but it worked amazingly well. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent I spoke with was able to see exactly what was holding up my back payments and pushed them through right away. Got my money 2 days later. Their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

I've never heard of this before! Does it really work? I've wasted so many hours on hold already, I'm willing to try anything at this point.

Yeah, it actually works. The DOL phone system is completely overwhelmed, but Claimyr has some way of getting through. When I used it, they called me back with a DOL agent already on the line. The agent saw there was a system flag on my account that was holding things up, and she removed it right away.

My back payments came exactly 8 days after they told me they were releasing them. This was just last month. Hang in there!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That gives me hope - I'm on day 6 now so maybe just a couple more days to go.

does anyone know if they do batch processing for the payments? i heard they only process backpay on certain days of the week. might explain some of the delays people see

Yes, this is correct. NY unemployment typically processes most payments in batches, with standard weekly claims processed on Monday/Tuesday and many back payments and adjustments processed on Wednesday/Thursday. However, this can vary depending on holidays and system maintenance schedules. This is one reason why some people see delays even after approval - they might have just missed the processing window for that week's batch.

UPDATE: My back payment just hit my account this morning! So it took exactly 8 days (6 business days) from when they said it was approved. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

That's awesome Emma! Thanks for updating us - it's so helpful to see actual timelines from real people. I've been lurking on this thread because I'm in a similar boat (waiting for back payments from February). Your experience gives me hope that the system does eventually work, even if it's frustratingly slow. Congrats on finally getting your money!

That's fantastic news Emma! I'm so relieved for you - I know how stressful it is waiting for money you desperately need. I'm actually in a similar situation right now (been waiting 4 days since they told me my back payments were "in process"). Your timeline is really encouraging and gives me a better idea of what to expect. Thanks so much for coming back to update everyone - it really helps those of us still waiting to have realistic expectations!

Congratulations Emma! What a relief that must be. I'm actually dealing with something similar - been waiting 9 days now since they told me my back payments were "approved for processing" (not even "released" like yours was). Your post gives me hope that maybe mine will come through soon too. The waiting is the worst part when you're counting on that money. Thanks for taking the time to update everyone - it's really helpful to see real timelines instead of just the vague "soon" we get from DOL!

So happy for you Emma! I've been following this thread because I'm in week 3 of waiting for my back payments after they said they were "released." Your update gives me hope that the system isn't completely broken, just really slow. Did you get the full $2,450 you were expecting, or did they hold anything back for taxes/adjustments?

That's amazing Emma! What a huge relief that must be after all that stress and waiting. I'm actually going through the exact same thing right now - been waiting 7 days since they told me my back payments were "approved for release" and your timeline gives me so much hope. The uncertainty is the worst part when you're depending on that money for bills. Thanks for coming back to update us - it really helps to see real experiences instead of just guessing! Fingers crossed mine comes through in the next day or two following your timeline.

That's such great news Emma! I've been silently following this thread because I'm in day 4 of waiting for my back payments after being told they were "approved for release." Your 8-day timeline is really helpful - gives me a realistic expectation instead of just hoping it'll magically appear overnight. The stress of waiting for money you desperately need is so real. Thanks for taking the time to come back and update everyone, it means a lot to those of us still in limbo!

Congratulations Emma! That's such a huge relief - I know exactly how stressful that waiting period is. I'm currently on day 3 of waiting for my back payments after being told they were "approved for release" so your 8-day timeline is really reassuring. It's so helpful when people come back to update the community with actual results instead of leaving everyone hanging. Gives those of us still waiting some realistic expectations. Hope you can finally catch up on those bills!

That's wonderful Emma! What a relief that must be after all that waiting and stress. I'm actually in a very similar situation - been waiting 5 days now since they told me my back payments were "approved for release." Your 8-day timeline is really encouraging and helps me set realistic expectations. The not knowing when it'll come through is honestly the worst part when you're counting on that money. Thanks so much for coming back to update everyone - it's incredibly helpful to see actual timelines from real experiences rather than just the vague "soon" we get from DOL representatives!

So glad to hear it finally came through Emma! I'm on day 10 now since they told me mine were "approved for release" and starting to get really worried. Your timeline gives me hope that maybe I'm just in a slower batch. Did you notice any status changes in your online account before the money actually hit, or did it just appear without warning? Thanks for updating us - it's so rare that people come back to share the resolution!
