Confused about possible NY unemployment refund after 9 months unemployed

So I've been unemployed since August 2022 and have been collecting benefits the whole time. Last week I got a message on my account about a 'monetary determination recalculation' but no clear explanation. When I logged in today, there's a note about a 'potential refund adjustment' but I'm completely confused about what this means. Will I be getting extra money? Does anyone know how to tell if you're getting a refund from NY unemployment? I checked my payment history but nothing looks different. I tried calling but of course can't get through to anyone. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm so confused about this whole process.

Hannah White

Same thing happened to me about 3 months ago! I got that 'monetary determination recalculation' message and was totally confused. Turns out they had calculated my benefit rate wrong initially. I ended up getting a lump sum deposit about 10 days later for the difference between what I should have been getting and what I actually got for all those weeks. Check your payment history tab daily - that's where it'll show up first.

Thank you! Did they send you any kind of notice BEFORE the money hit your account? Or did it just show up?

It literally just appeared in my account one day. No warning, no explanation, nothing. The system is so broken 🤦‍♂️

wait how much did u end up getting tho? im curious what these recalculations usually amount to

For me it was around $1,450 total. They had my benefit rate $35 lower than it should've been for about 42 weeks.

After banging my head against the wall trying to figure out the same thing, I tried a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an actual human at unemployment who explained everything. Turns out it was because of wage reports from a previous employer that got submitted late. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast and they explained exactly what was happening with my claim. Here's a video of how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds too good to be true. another day another unemployment 'hack' that doesn't work. what's the catch here?

No catch - it just connects you with a real agent instead of waiting on hold forever. After 3 weeks of calling daily and never getting through, this was the only thing that worked for me.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? did it actually work?

Yeah it actually did. I was super skeptical too but was desperate after weeks of trying. Got a callback with an agent in about 90 mins. The unemployment system is such garbage that I was willing to try anything at that point 🤷‍♂️

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the ny unemployment phone system has me ready to throw my phone out the window

100% worked for me. I was in the same boat - ready to throw my phone after being disconnected for the 50th time. This was honestly the best decision I made during this whole unemployment nightmare.

Okay so I literally JUST went through this exact situation last month. Here's what happened: they periodically review claims and sometimes find that you were eligible for more $ than you received based on your work history and quarterly earnings. When they do this 'recalculation' it means they're adjusting your benefit amount retroactively. In my case, they found I should've been getting $62 more per week than I was. The refund came about 2 weeks after I got that message.

This could be good news actually! My sister got this message a while back and ended up getting almost $2000 in backpay because they had undervalued her base period wages. Just keep checking your account daily.

Happened to me too but it took FOREVER to actually get the money. The NY unemployment system is such a joke 🤡

How long did it take for your sister to get the money after seeing the message?

It was about 3 weeks for her. But I've heard it can take anywhere from 10 days to 8 weeks depending on... well who knows what lol. The system is so random.

You should be able to see it in your payment history IF they process the refund. Sometimes they just do these recalculations and nothing happens. The entire ny unemployment system is a hot mess. I'd recommend trying to get someone on the phone to explain what's happening with your specific claim.

I've tried calling like 20 times but can never get through 😫

Try calling right when they open at 8am or try that claimyr service someone mentioned above. My cousin used it and said it worked to get through last month.

Not to be a downer but don't get your hopes up too high. I got the same message back in January and literally NOTHING happened after that. No refund, no explanation, nothing. The ny unemployment system is a complete disaster. You might get lucky but don't count on it until you see the $ in your account.

THIS!!! Same exact thing happened to me. Got all excited for nothing 😑

Did either of you try to follow up about it? Or just let it go?

I called literally 50 times over two weeks. Finally got through to someone who said 'the system is still processing it' and that was 4 months ago lol

I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims all the time. Here's what's happening: When NY unemployment does a 'monetary determination recalculation,' they're reviewing your base period wages to make sure your weekly benefit amount was calculated correctly. This happens for several reasons: 1. An employer submitted wage information late 2. There was an error in how your benefits were initially calculated 3. Some wages weren't properly attributed to your work history 4. They're conducting a routine audit If they find you were underpaid, you'll receive a retroactive payment for the difference between what you received and what you should have received for each week claimed. Your best bet is to: 1. Check your payment history daily 2. Look for a new monetary determination letter in your online inbox 3. Try to speak with an agent for clarification For getting through to someone, I've had clients use claimyr.com with good results - it keeps dialing and gets you a callback when someone answers. Dealing with NY unemployment is incredibly frustrating, but hang in there! The refund should appear in the same way your regular benefits do (direct deposit or debit card).

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! This makes way more sense now. I'll keep checking my payment history.

As someone who designs unemployment systems (not NY's thankfully), I can confirm this is accurate. The recalculations are often triggered automatically by the system.

No one ever knows what's happening with ny unemployment because they REFUSE to communicate clearly. It's like they purposely make everything confusing. Good luck, hope you get some $$$ 💰

Anyone else think its crazy that we literally have to come to reddit to figure out basic information about our benefits? The whole system is so broken. OP - hope you get your money!

For real! The unemployment website looks like it was designed in 1997 and never updated 😂

And don't even get me started on their phone system. I'd rather do my taxes blindfolded than try to navigate that menu again 🤮

lmaooo fr! it's like they purposely made it as user-unfriendly as possible

Take screenshots of EVERYTHING. Ny unemployment is notorious for messages that disappear with no explanation. Document all of this in case you need to prove later that you saw this message.

Good idea, just did that. The whole system is so sketchy.

has anyone else been waitin MONTHS for unemployment to fix issues? im on week 11 of 'pending' for no apparent reason 😭

0 coins

-

Ella Knight

Bruh I waited 14 weeks last year. The only thing that finally fixed it was getting through to an actual person on the phone. Try that Claimyr site someone mentioned above.

Ramen. Lots and lots of ramen. And maxed out credit cards. 0/10 would not recommend.

My experience with NY unemployment has taught me one thing: NOTHING happens without speaking to an actual human. Those messages in the system are automated and often misleading. You need to get someone on the phone to explain what's happening with your specific claim.

i had something similar happen and it was bcuz they found out one of my employers had reported incorrect wages. Took like 5 weeks but eventually got a pretty decent chunk of money backdated. just wait it out or try to get someone on the phone if ur anxious about it.

Fun fact: the NY unemployment system still runs on COBOL programming from the 1970s. That's why these 'recalculations' and weird messages happen - the system is literally ancient. 🦖

-

Caleb Stone

Programmer here - this is 100% true and it's TERRIFYING. During COVID they were desperately trying to find COBOL programmers because so few people know it anymore.

No wonder it takes them 6 weeks to make a simple change to your claim. They're probably using punch cards to update the system 💀
