Confused about NY unemployment refund date - which transcript shows this info?
I'm trying to figure out if I'm getting a refund for my NY unemployment taxes from 2021. I heard they're doing some kind of adjustment because of that tax break on unemployment benefits, but I'm completely lost on how to check this. Which transcript am I supposed to look at on the website? And once I find the right one, where exactly on the transcript would the refund date appear? I've been looking through different options but don't want to request the wrong one. Has anyone successfully found this information?

u need to look at account transcript for 2021 tax year. the refund info should be under the transactions section with a code 846 next to it.

•Thanks! Is that the only transcript I need to check? There's like 4 different options when I try to request it.

To check for your unemployment tax refund from 2021, you'll need to request your "Account Transcript" for tax year 2021. When you get it, look for Transaction Code 846 - this indicates a refund was issued. Next to it will be the date and amount. The refund could also appear as a credit on your account rather than a direct payment in some cases. The four transcript types are: 1. Account Transcript - THIS is the one you need for refund info 2. Return Transcript - Shows most line items from your original return 3. Record of Account - Combines the first two 4. Wage & Income - Shows income reported to the IRS Hope this helps!

•This is super clear, thank you! I'll request the Account Transcript right now. Do you know how long it usually takes to receive it?

I was looking for the same thing last week! Got so frustrated trying to figure it out. The account transcript is definitely what you need, but it took me FOREVER to get through to someone who could help me understand what I was looking at.

•If you need to speak with the IRS about this, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through faster. I waited on hold for 3 hours before discovering it. They have a service that gets you connected to IRS agents without the insane wait times. Saved me hours of frustration. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

I checked my transcripts for 2021 and couldn't find ANYTHING about unemployment refunds!! Been waiting since February and nothing. Are they still even processing these anymore? I thought everyone was supposed to get this automatically?? The whole system is such a MESS.

•Same boat here. I think they're still working through backlog. My sister got hers last month but I'm still waiting. Definitely check account transcript tho.

Just to clarify some misinformation here - the unemployment tax adjustment from 2021 isn't something specific to NY unemployment. This was a federal tax adjustment that applies to unemployment benefits received during the 2021 tax year. The IRS has been processing these adjustments in batches since 2023, but some are still pending. In the Account Transcript, you should look for: 1. Code 291 - which shows the adjustment being made 2. Code 846 - which shows the refund issuance If you see Code 971 labeled "Notice Issued" followed by Code 290 without any refund, it might mean they adjusted your account but determined no refund was due.

•Oh that makes sense! I just checked and I see a code 971 followed by 290 but no 846 anywhere. Guess that means no refund for me? 😞

That's correct. If you see Code 971 and 290 without a Code 846, it typically means they reviewed your account, made an adjustment, but determined you weren't eligible for additional refund. This could be because: 1. You already accounted for the exclusion when you filed 2. Even with the exclusion, you didn't overpay taxes 3. The exclusion amount wasn't enough to change your tax liability If you believe this is an error, you can request clarification by calling the IRS at 1-800-829-1040, but be prepared for a long wait time. Alternatively, you could file an amended return (Form 1040-X) if you believe you're entitled to the adjustment.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'm pretty sure I didn't account for this when I filed, so I'm surprised I'm not getting anything back. Might have to call and check. Dreading those wait times though...

When I was dealing with this last month I noticed they had my address wrong which is why I never got any notices about my refund. Make sure all your contact info is correct in the system! Also check if you had any offsets like child support or other federal debts that might have eaten up your refund.

Wait a minute I'm confused now. Is this about NY state tax refunds or federal tax refunds? Because I thought NY was doing their own separate adjustment for unemployment taxes in addition to the federal one? Can someone clarify?

•This is referring to the federal tax adjustment for unemployment benefits received in 2021. New York State generally conforms to federal tax treatment of unemployment benefits, but they implement these changes separately. If you're specifically looking for a NY state tax refund, you would need to check your NY state tax account, not the federal IRS transcripts we've been discussing. The NY Department of Taxation and Finance has a separate system for checking refund status.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful information! I finally got my transcript and found the codes - looks like I'm getting a small refund (code 846) scheduled for next week. For anyone else looking, definitely check the Account Transcript and look for those transaction codes 291 and 846. And make sure you're looking at the right system depending on whether you're checking federal or NY state refunds!
