Can't find refund info on my NY unemployment tax transcript - where to look?
I finally got my tax transcript in the mail today from NY unemployment, but I'm totally confused about where to find out if I'm getting a refund. I've been staring at this thing for an hour and can't figure out what I'm supposed to be looking for. Does anyone know specifically what section shows if there's a refund coming? Or maybe there's a code or something I should be looking for? My eyes are going cross-eyed trying to decipher this thing!

Look for the section called "Tax and Credits" or sometimes "Account Information" on your transcript. There should be a line item that says something like "Refund" or "Overpayment Credit" with an amount next to it. If the amount is positive, that's your refund. Also check for code 846 which typically indicates a refund issued.

Thanks! I don't see code 846 anywhere on mine. There's a Tax and Credits section but it just has a bunch of numbers that don't make sense to me. Does that mean I'm not getting anything back?

The NY unemployment tax transcript can be really confusing. If you're looking for a refund specifically related to unemployment benefits, you need to check the section called "Account Information" and look for transaction code 846 (Refund Issued) with a date next to it and a dollar amount. If you don't see that code, you might not have a refund coming, or it hasn't been processed yet. It's also possible you're looking at the wrong type of transcript. There are several types: Account Transcript, Return Transcript, Record of Account, and Wage & Income Transcript. The Account Transcript is the one that will show your refund status.

I think mine is a Return Transcript. That explains why I can't find the refund info! How do I get the Account Transcript instead? Do I have to request that separately?

OMG I went through the EXACT same thing last month!!! The NY unemployment tax forms are THE WORST!! I spent days trying to figure out if I was getting money back. So frustrating!!! Did you try calling them? I called like 20 times and couldn't get through to anyone who could help me.

Yes, you'd need to specifically request an Account Transcript. You can do this online through the IRS website using their "Get Transcript" tool, or by submitting Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return) and checking box 6a for "Return Transcript." Keep in mind that if your refund is still being processed, it might not show up yet even on the Account Transcript. The typical processing time for NY unemployment-related refunds in 2025 is about 3-4 weeks after filing.

Thanks for the detailed info! I'll request the Account Transcript today. I filed about 5 weeks ago so hopefully it's processed by now.

I had this exact problem last month and wasted days trying to figure it out. After failing to get through to anyone on the phone, I tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an actual human at the unemployment office in under 10 minutes. They walked me through exactly where to find the refund info on my transcript. Saved me so much headache! You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

is this legit? seems kinda fishy that they can get you through when nobody else can...

Yeah, it's completely legitimate. They basically wait on hold for you and call you when they get an agent. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. The unemployment rep I spoke with was super helpful and pointed out exactly where to look on my transcript.

My brother in law works for the IRS and he says if the transcript has TC-150 followed by a negative number that means you're getting a refund. Look for that!

That's not quite right. TC-150 is the tax return filed code, and the amount shown is your tax liability (not a refund). The refund is indicated by TC-846 with a positive amount. Having incorrect information can cause more confusion, so please make sure information is accurate before posting.

UPDATE: I called using the Claimyr service that someone suggested, and got through to a real person at the unemployment office. They explained that my Return Transcript doesn't show refund info, and I need the Account Transcript. They also checked my account and confirmed I DO have a refund coming - $743! It should be deposited next week. Thanks everyone for your help!
