Will NY unemployment payment go to new direct deposit account I changed yesterday?

I just updated my direct deposit info for my NY unemployment benefits yesterday afternoon. My weekly certification is already processed and says 'payment pending' in the system. Will this payment go to my new bank account or will it still go to my old account? I'm asking because I closed my old account and REALLY need this money to clear. Anyone know how long the direct deposit changes take to process?

Probably too late for this payment, tbh. Ny unemployment usually processes payments overnight after certification, so if you changed it AFTER certifying it's likely already headed to the old account. Maaaaybe if you did it really early yesterday but dont count on it

Oh no, that's what I was afraid of. I did the change around 3pm yesterday after I certified in the morning. Do you know if the payment will bounce back to NYSDOL if the account is closed?

Direct deposit changes with NYSDOL typically take 1-2 business days to process. If your payment status already shows 'payment pending' before you made the change, it will almost certainly go to your previous account. When the payment attempts to deposit into a closed account, it will usually be returned to NYSDOL, and they'll have to reissue it. This can take up to 3-5 business days after the return. You may want to call them to expedite this process.

Thank you for explaining that. Do you know if I need to do anything special to get them to reissue it? Or will it happen automatically once it bounces back?

In most cases, NYSDOL will automatically reprocess the payment to your new account once they receive the returned funds. However, these returns can sometimes get caught in processing limbo. If you don't see the payment hit your new account within 5 business days, I'd recommend contacting them directly to ensure they're aware of the situation.

Had this exact same thing happen to me in January! The payment bounced back to NYSDOL and then it took almost 2 weeks for them to send it to my new account. Super frustrating when ur counting on that money!!

Two weeks? That's terrible! I can't wait that long...

The EXACT same thing happened to me last month! I changed my direct deposit the same day I certified and panicked because I also closed my old account. I called them like 15 times but couldn't get through to anyone. The payment eventually showed up in my new account but it took 8 days!!! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this too. The system is so frustrating!!!

8 days is still better than 2 weeks I guess... but I need to pay rent. Did you do anything special to make it go through?

Been in your situation before! Getting through to an agent is your best bet. When my payment went to a closed account, I had to speak with someone to get it fixed quickly. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent in about 10 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Once I reached an agent, they were able to see that my payment had been returned and expedited the reissue to my new account. It posted within 2 business days instead of the 2+ weeks it would have taken otherwise.

That sounds really helpful! Did they ask for any specific information when you called? I'm going to try this today.

Just have your NY.gov ID, the last 4 of your SSN, and date of birth ready. And tell them exactly what happened - that you changed direct deposit after certifying and the old account is closed. They can see the returned payment in their system and push it through to your new account faster.

For anyone else reading this thread in the future - ALWAYS update your direct deposit information at least 3 business days before your next certification to avoid delays. When payments go to closed accounts, they're automatically returned to NYSDOL, but the reissue process isn't immediate. The department has to (1) receive the returned funds, (2) process the return, (3) verify the new account information, and (4) reissue the payment. Each step can take 1-2 business days.

UPDATE: I used that Claimyr service to get through to an agent this morning. The woman I spoke with confirmed my payment did try to go to my closed account yesterday, but she was able to see it had already been returned. She expedited the reissue to my new account and said I should have it in 24-48 hours. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help!

Thanks for updating us! I'm going to bookmark that service in case I ever have issues again. 24-48 hours is WAY better than waiting weeks!

This is such valuable information for anyone dealing with direct deposit changes! I'm new to NY unemployment and had no idea about the timing issues. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here - it's way more helpful than anything on the official website. Bookmarking this thread and that Claimyr service just in case I run into similar issues down the road.

Welcome to the community! You're absolutely right - this thread is a goldmine of real-world info that you just can't find on the official sites. The timing issues with direct deposit changes seem to catch so many people off guard. Definitely smart to bookmark this and that service @Oliver Schmidt mentioned. Hope you never need to use it, but better to have it just in case!

This whole thread is incredibly helpful! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - changed my direct deposit info yesterday but my payment already shows as processed. Reading through everyone's experiences, it sounds like I should expect it to bounce back and then call using that Claimyr service to get it expedited. @Yara Nassar thanks for sharing your update - gives me hope that this can be resolved quickly with the right approach!

@CyberSamurai you're definitely on the right track! Based on what everyone's shared here, it seems like calling through that service as soon as you see the payment bounce back is the key to getting it resolved quickly. @Yara Nassar s'experience shows it really can make a huge difference - 24-48 hours versus potentially weeks of waiting. Make sure you have all your info ready when you call like @Oliver Schmidt mentioned. Fingers crossed your situation gets sorted out just as smoothly!
