Can I change my direct deposit info right before my NY unemployment payment is supposed to hit?
I'm wondering if anyone knows what happens if I change my direct deposit information right before a payment is scheduled. My current bank is charging ridiculous fees, so I opened a new account at another bank last week. My unemployment payment is supposed to be deposited this Wednesday (about $475) but I'm not sure if I should wait until after that payment clears before updating my banking info. Will changing my direct deposit right now delay this week's payment? Or will it automatically go to the new account? I don't want to mess anything up and have to wait another week or two for my money. Has anyone done this before with NY unemployment?

Do NOT change it until after this payment posts. I did this exact thing in August and it caused a 3-week delay. The system flagged my account for a security review because of the bank change, and then I couldn't get anyone on the phone to resolve it. Just wait til Thursday to make the change.

•Oh crap, thanks for the warning! I definitely cant afford to wait 3 more weeks. I'll just eat the stupid bank fee one more time I guess 😭

•yep this is the way. NY unemployment system is like an old computer from 1992...one wrong move and the whole thing crashes lol

After trying for weeks to talk to someone at NY unemployment about this same issue, I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they connected me to an actual agent who helped me update my bank info without any payment delays. It was the only way I could talk to a real human and honestly talking to an agent got my money flowing without all the headaches. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•is this some kind of ad? how does this even work? sounds fishy

•Not an ad lol. It's a service that calls unemployment for you and stays on hold, then rings your phone when an agent picks up. Saved me like 4 hours of hold music hell

•Yeah it worked for me. They call and when they get someone, they transfer the call to you. Check out their site claimyr.com if you're stuck

•I actually used this too! Was skeptical at first but talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast after weeks of nothing happening

In my experience ANY change to your account information triggers a security hold. This happened to me in October and my payment was delayed for 2 weeks. The system is super sensitive to fraud so they basically freeze everything while they verify the change wasnt made by someone else.

I work for a different state agency (not unemployment) but we deal with similar systems. The safe approach is ALWAYS wait for pending payments to clear before making account changes. These government systems update in batches and changing info mid-process can cause your payment to get stuck in digital limbo. Trust me - just wait.

My roomate changed his bank info on a Monday and the payment was supposed to hit Wednesdsy. It ended up going to his OLD account anyway, then the next payment went to the new one. So even if you change it now, this payment will probably still go to your current bank.

Quick question - is it just the monthly maintenance fee your bank is charging or something else? Cuz if it's the monthly fee, you might be able to call them and explain your situation. I had Chase waive 3 months of fees when I was on unemployment last year. Just another option if you're worried about changing the direct deposit.

•It's overdraft fees. They keep processing the big charges first even when I make a deposit, so I get hit with like 3-4 overdraft fees at once. Just done with them.

Here's what u need to know about changing bank info with ny unemployment. I used to work there: 1) Changes made to direct deposit take 1-2 business days to fully process in the system 2) Payments already in the pipeline will STILL GO TO THE OLD ACCOUNT 3) You won't see the change reflected for the next scheduled payment after that 4) If something goes wrong, call immediately - but be prepared to wait or use a service like claimyr.com to reach someone 5) Take screenshots of every confirmation page when making the change 6) Keep both accounts open for at least 2 weeks to avoid any issues Hope this helps!

•This is super helpful! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now. Quick question - when you say keep both accounts open for 2 weeks, does that mean I need to maintain the minimum balance in the old account during that time? My old bank requires $500 minimum and I was planning to close it right after switching to avoid more fees.

My personal experience from changing my DD info was TERRIBLE. took 6 weeks to fix and I ended up having to get my state rep involved. I had to borrow $ from family just to pay rent. The system is broken beyond belief.

Just transfer the money out of that account as soon as it hits? Why risk payment delays when you can just move the money yourself after it deposits?

•That's what I'll probably do this time. Just annoying because they'll still hit me with fees before I can transfer it out.

I went through this exact situation last month! Changed my direct deposit on a Tuesday and my payment was supposed to hit that Friday. The payment still went to my old account as expected, but here's the key thing - I called the old bank immediately when it posted and explained I was closing the account due to fees. They actually waived the monthly maintenance fee for that month since I was transferring everything out right away. Might be worth a shot to call your bank and explain the situation - some of them will work with you, especially if you mention you're dealing with unemployment. Then just make the DD change after this payment clears to be safe.

•That's actually a really smart approach! I never thought about calling the bank to explain the situation. Worth a try since the worst they can say is no. Thanks for sharing your experience - gives me hope that there might be a way to avoid at least some of these ridiculous fees while playing it safe with the unemployment system.
