Lost my NY unemployment debit card - how long does direct deposit switch take?
I just realized I lost my NY unemployment KeyBank debit card yesterday and I'm freaking out a little. Already reported it lost to KeyBank, but now I'm thinking I should just switch to direct deposit instead of getting a replacement card. Has anyone done this? If I change to direct deposit today, will my payment this week go to my bank account or will I still need to wait for a new card? Really need this money for rent next week and can't afford any delays.

You can definitely switch to direct deposit, and it's probably a good idea. Log into your NY.gov account, go to your unemployment services dashboard, and look for payment method options. There should be a section where you can add your bank account info. As for timing, direct deposit usually activates within 3 business days after you submit the change. If your next certification/payment is processed after those 3 days, it should go straight to your bank account. If not, it might still go to the card system, but since you reported the card lost, KeyBank should be sending you a replacement anyway.

•Thanks! I just did that. Do you know if I'll get an email confirmation when the direct deposit is set up? The page just said "changes submitted" but didn't give me a timeframe.

When I switched to direct deposit in January, it took exactly 5 business days for the change to take effect. The NYSDOL system is pretty consistent with that timeframe. Make sure all your bank info is correct - even one wrong digit will cause delays. Double-check your routing and account numbers!

•5 days?? That's longer than I was hoping for. My certification day is Sunday, so I'm worried the payment will get stuck somewhere between systems.

•7 days?! That's going to be a problem for me. Did your payment get delayed or did it still come on time?

I lost my card back in February and went through the same thing. If you've already reported the card lost, KeyBank will automatically mail you a new card which takes 7-10 business days. Your money will still go to the card account even if you switch to direct deposit now, until the direct deposit takes effect. Here's what I did to speed things up - I used Claimyr.com to get through to a live NYSDOL agent (seriously, they connected me in 15 minutes when I'd been trying for days). The agent was able to expedite my direct deposit setup AND help me check on the replacement card status. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The direct deposit started working in 3 days after talking to the agent. Saved me a ton of stress!

•This is really helpful, thanks! I'll check out that service. Did you have to pay anything to use it?

everyting with unemployment is SLOW!!! when i tried chaging my address it took 2 weeks!!! they never sent confirmation either u just have to wait and see. the whole system is garbage but whatca gonna do

•That's not entirely accurate. Address changes do take longer because they require additional verification, but payment method changes are typically processed within 3-5 business days. The system prioritizes payment-related changes.

I just went through this exact same situation last month! So the direct deposit change takes 3-5 business days to process, but here's the important part - if your payment gets processed BEFORE the direct deposit is active, it will still try to go to your card. Since you reported the card lost, that money will be held in your KeyBank account until you either get the new card OR the direct deposit kicks in. If you need that money right away for rent, you should: 1. Call KeyBank again and request an expedited replacement card (they can do it in 3 business days instead of 7-10) 2. Call NYSDOL to notify them about your situation 3. Set up the direct deposit anyway for future payments Believe me, I panicked too, but the money doesn't disappear - it just gets held until you have a way to access it.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll call KeyBank about expediting the card tomorrow. Do you remember if they charged extra for that service?

hmmm my roomate had similar thing happen and they told him it would take 3 days but took like 2 weeks lol. but that was during tax season so maybe thats why it was slow? idk the timing is pretty random from what ive seen

•It definitely can vary! Tax season affects everything with banking. In my experience, if you call and explain it's for rent/bills, they're more likely to put a rush on it.

After using Claimyr, the agent explained to me that when you switch payment methods, the timing depends on where you are in the payment cycle. If you're just about to get paid (like within 48 hours), the change won't apply to that payment - it'll go to whatever method was active before. The change applies to the next payment cycle. Just wanted to clarify since there's some confusion in the responses.

•That's absolutely correct. The payment system locks your payment method about 48 hours before your benefit processes. Any changes made after that cutoff apply to the next payment cycle.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know I followed the advice here. I used Claimyr to reach an agent who confirmed my direct deposit will be active by Monday (just in time for next payment). They also said my replacement card is being expedited at no extra charge. Thank you all for your help!!

•Great! Glad it worked out. For future reference, it's always good to have direct deposit set up anyway - much more secure than the debit cards.
